Just got a couple moulds for a REAL Bullet and a Minie, and was wondering what you fellows use for bullet lube. Not looking for anything ellaborate, or complicated, just something that works well and doesnt cost an arm and a leg. Was wondering about that Wonderlube 1000+ or similar. Would appreciate anything yall can give as I am new to this part of the game. Thanks.

I use the R.E.A.L bullet in my .50 hawken. For lube I first use Lee Liquid Alox. Once that's dry I carry them in my pouch, when loading I then use Wonderlube. Works for me and my rifle well.

RRW,
I thought about the Liquid Allox from Lee, but I wondered what the fowling would be like. I have casted a billion pistol bullets for 38 spl, and it worked fine with bullseye and Win 231, but was concerned that with BP it might react differently. I suppose that there is a bit of beeswax in allox, is there? If that works, then do you just finger rub the wonderlube on them at the range? I have a few bottles of the allox, so I hope it works. Will have to give it a try.

Loved the site on the homemade bullet lube as well. Pork renderin's sounds like it may be just about the level of technology I can handle. Would bear grease work as well, do you think. Lots of bears in these parts, but not many hogs.

Well now that you mention it,,here's a lube the BPCR crowd is fond of, It's called Mathews Lube;
1/2 pound of beeswax, 4oz. of neatsfoot oil ,and 1 3.5oz bar of Neutragena original facial soap,
Melt the wax and add the oil, add the soap slow as cut "slivers" so it'll melt (carefull not to get too hot,you don't want to boil the soap). transfer to another jar or tin to cool stirring contstently till it's real smooth.
I've tried the 50/50 crisco and beeswax and found it messy and ineffective. I've also tried liquid Alox,, 3 dips ,,and they shot the short REAL from my .54 well, I didn't have any trouble with fowling but my rifle has a large bore and shallow groove.
I'd bet you could replace the neatsfoot oil with bear oil (thats the stuff that floats to the top of rendered bearfat after a few weeks)
I've messed around with over powder wads and buttons also,,and the best I've found is a healthy pinch of a paper wasps nest!
best wishes to ya K,,tacks

I smear a blob of wonderlube in the muzzle then seat the bullet. I'm using Swiss powder, that also keeps my fouling down.

Come on now Triple Se7en,

The beeswax gives the venison a sweet taste, the neatsfoot oil preserves the hide, and the soap cleans it up real good. It's not for Tacks acne, but for Bambi's father!

actually soap is made from lard and lye, remember? but nowadays they call it "hydrolized animal protien" an dress it up with fragance and additives.
I remember about 25 yrs ago when Neutagena hit the market. Paul Harvey usta hawk the stuff, it's a scandinavian fishermens concoction,,,,,,

Hey 7's,,how's the hip commin along?? Well I hope?? I thought of you,, cause I've been up on crutches the past few weeks my own self,,Knee Surgery! Gotta keep the immobilization split on another 2 full weeks ,
P.S. I don't need no malt. I ferment the "grape".

You sound like you'll be off three months too Tacks.. maybe more! Is it the gas pedal/brake knee?.... if so I pity you cuz' I couldn't drive any vehicles either. Immobilization usually means you either tore sumthin' right off the bone or you aimed your roundball barrel in the wrong direction... Ouch/lol! I'm due to report back to work on Tuesday. I've been walkin' straight as an arrow for two weeks now. They'll have me on light duty at work for another three months.. then re-evaluate the hip again. Good luck mending that knee!

After reading the posts here, and some of the attached links, and knowing tacks and his desire to remain "traditional", I came upon a highly technical recipe for bullet lube that looks like it will work in my neck of the woods. Here it is:

1. A medium glob of Wonderlube 1000+

2. A couple slabs of Lard - any variety will do

3. A nice sized hunk of Alox.

4. Stir slowly over gentle heat till all is melted and well blended. Pour into another container before your wife gets home.

5. Allow to cool

6. Liberally smear over the bullets.

7. Load powder, bullet and prime with 4F.

8. Squeeze trigger.

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until the desired euphoric effect is attained.

Well how's the stuff lookin after these past few days? Did they mix well, or is there some seperation/settling going on?
What I've seen is a good maxi/minne lube needs some amount of"stick too" ta really do the job. Most of the commercial stuff dosen't hang in there long enough,,if it did,,how would you ever need to buy more?!

It stuck together good, with no separation, and at room temperature of about 72 degrees, it is stiff enough not to run. In hunting season here, as you know, it is typically about 50 degrees, down to about zero, so it should do well. I think the stick bullet lube I added was the fixer of the elixer! Can't wait to try it out. Maybe tomorrow afternoon.

well good luck,,some fellers will use a "sizing die" of sorts to be sure there is an even application on each bullet.
Use a playing card or business card to roll around a bullet,,tape the side, then lube bullets and "stuff'm" through.
Bring along something to try as an "over powder wad" too.
Give each experiment the benefit of a clean bore and don't change too many things at once,,remember, eliminate the variables.

Best wishes,,,,

tacks,

I always appreciate your suggestions. Good idea about the buisness card. I'll give it a try. Just spotted a hornets nest in a tree out back as well, so I may deprive some of the little nasties of a home for the sport of it.

Shootist

Don't go around tellin' Tacks you like his suggestions. That's why his name is Tacks. He uses tacks to stop the swelling in his head everytime someone speaks highly that he knows alot about muzzleloading. Now he's got to go to the nearest Wally World & after he's done teasing the ladies in the yarn section where he buys the pillow ticking for my Shenandoah, he's got to go into the hardware section to find more tacks... see what you did....lol.

Just messin' with you Bud! I no longer need that tickin'.... I put that Shenandoah back on the wall above the fireplace & that's where she's stayin'. Gonna find me another roundballer that ain't fancy to scratch-up in the thickets later this year. 10-4!!!!!

Truth is I member' that too,,I just have yet too go get any!!
I had enough to make it through fall,,then it got cold, now it's spring and I got this darn bumb leg
Did ya ever read the "secret papers"? Havin patchin won't do no good if you don't understand the "secret papers"! Other wise ya gotta buy "off the shelf" stuff like the masses.

I got the tacks handle from "spittin tacks!" And it's got me in more trouble than I can tell ya,,Norwegen/Irish desent toss in a little German, savor that with college education and a good dose of "been around the block".,and I've little time for "diplomacy",,,thus my humble self,,,tacks.

Spent a quiet afternoon at the pit, and tried out the new cast bullets with the homemade goop to lube them up. It was about nice deer hunting weather - 45 degrees. Lube stayed on good, fouling was not too bad - one swipe with a lubed patch between shots did well. Got a five shot group of 4 inches off hand at 50 yards, which is minute of deer. First time out so I was a little shaky. Next time I am going to add the hornets nest, and see how she goes. I was using 90 gr of FFg.

Triple se7en - sorry if I have built tacks up to you. I try hard not to trash ALL my friends. or should I say BOTH my friends.

Have you tried using this as a patch lube?

I have tried tallow and bee's wax and found it at least as good as store bought. I usually use Ox Yoke, but I keep hearing that one can't use it in cold weather. I'm not sure why I listen, but I do. I have used it in the mountains (more or less mountains) here in Maryland in the winter with no problems.

I'm going to be hunting near Schefferville, in Northern Quebec, the first week of September and I want to make sure that I have a patch lube that is good for the weather there.
