How difficult is it to change the barrel on a Marlin 336? I've seen 336 barrels, and it looks like they're threaded to screw right into the receiver. Does this mean that the headspacing is set the same on all Marlin barrels, or are they short chambered, screwed on and then reamed, so the headspace only works for receiver the barrel was attached to? In other words, are Marlin 336 barrels interchangeable, or will each barrel only work after attaching it and then performing additional chamber finishing? I'd like to order a new barrel for a 336, but don't want to mess with reaming or finishing.

Since you're in the KC area, you should probably talk to Regan Nonneman in Maryville, MO. Regan is the best Marlin 'smith that I know of.

I don't think that you can be sure of installing a threaded replacement barrel on any rifle without some machine work and hand fitting to get the headspace right. I think that Regan has reamers for just about any cartridge that can work through a 336 action.
