Have the lumber and the desire to build myself just one more rifle...have settled on only a few details. Cal .62 S-L-O-W twist (1/144) fullstock 32 to 36" Flinter, of course. Now what locks and barrels are top end, now-a-days?

My L&R lock and Green Mountain barrel have been very good. You've probably looked at www.trackofthewolf.com , but if not they have a nice online catalog.

well lets see if you want standard , then most certainly GM barrel and L&R lock . IMO though Oregon barrels makes a much better barrel with far more options as to speed of twist , type of rifling and such . So much so that myself I no longer use GM unless I have just no choice and thats what the customer asks for

But your asking about top end not standard . So I would say a barrel by Getz, Rice, or one of Ed Rayls barrels . i am about to place an order through Rayl for one of his 46 inch brass barrels . simply wonderful workmenship

I even have been hearing some good things about longhamick here lately from folks
If you go to Jim chambers web site you will find Barbie chambers Buckeye barrels is a distributor of the above barrels and her father jim will set you up with a very good lock .
As to the lock L&R will work . With a few extra hours they can make a very nice lock . But for a 10 spot more you can get one of Jim chambers lock
But that all depends on the lock your looking for . L&R has the most verity . But IMO davis and Chambers make far better locks .
If you looking for a specific lock then your going to have to go to a custom lock maker like Knobbe

Rice makes a very good barrel. Jim Chambers make the best locks.

Best shooting rifle I ever owned had a Colerain barel & a Chamber's lock. The worst shooting rifle I ever owned had a Getz barrel and a Davis lock.

Thanks, boys. The Walnut was cut 50 years ago by my wife's grand-dad, he owned a sawmill in So. IL. He said he saw a ML stock in the tree before he cut it. Gave the wax sealed board to me 25 years ago. 'Bout ripe now.
