Any suggestions for a tripod head?

I'm looking for something light, light, and light to mount on a Slik 613CF tripod for backpacking. To be used with a 65mm ATS scope and Swaro binos. At this point I'm open to pistol grips, ball heads, or 3 way panning types.

For a light and smooth pan head, a consideration would be the Bogen 700RC2. I like that one can adjust the tension so that the binos can be moved with the nose while viewing.

A little more expensive would be the Jim White pan head, that a lot of AZ hunters like.

Yes. I have the exact set up as pictured in the link. Great little head. Holds my Swaro 65 spotter without problem. Quick on and off. Used the set up in the Yukon, Alaska and BC.

Gainsayer,

Do you need an adapter plate for your scope, or can you just put the scope directly into the clamp? Also, how well does the ball and panning work?

Thanks.

I bought the adapter plate that they suggested for the spotter and I leave it attached to the bottom of my scope for quick on and off.The plate that is attached to my Swaro will not work. I put a similar plate on my camera for pictures.

Panning is not like the big heavy heads with handles. I have used this setup for moose, goat, deer and grizz. I have not had to pan large distances just small adjustments when the animal moves out of the field of view. I keep the ball tight enough to hold the scope, but can still move the spotter by holding a leg with one hand and moving the spotter with the other. I would not try to use this as a video camera panner.
