[it would be a good place to stash contraband] That's where I stash an old hunting license, in case I ever have to prove ownership, in the field or on an out-of-state hunting trip. On guns w/o such a recess, I use a number stamp or a Sharpie on the buttstock endgrain, under the buttplate, to etch my driver's license number. Those .300 Savage's are a great hunting cartridge - pretty much a .308 in performance - but in much nicer-looking rifles. . You stuff what in your butt hole? No, seriously, that's a good idea. I also agree with the .300 Savage being a great big game hunting round. It's been hailed as such for a century.

Almost.. 89 years, not quite a century. The 303 Savage has been going for 116 years though, you'll have to give that a try.

I came within a hair's breadth of buying a Savage 99 in .303 last year about this time. It was at a local pawn shop, and in very nice condition. Only thing that turned me off was the caliber, because I wanted one in .300 Savage. It sold while I was thinking it over. Now I wish I had bought it and continued looking for one in .300 too.

Can't stop with just one.. there are so many flavors to try!
If you reload, the 303 Savage is a breeze. Lee still makes dies that are reasonable and work fine, and you can pick up new Norma brass. Wish you could find 190gr jacketed bullets like they used originally, but the 170gr work fine also.

I know a retired game warden here in NH that once found a rifle left behind at an illegal moose kill. On a whim he took the buttplate off and found the bill of sale, and busted the guy. .
I've had all that I wanted of alot of things I've had, and alot more than I've needed of some things that turned out bad.

I was at a local gun show yesterday and they had two original Savage 99Fs in 300 Savage such as yours for $500 and $550..
The sling swivels are not original to the rifle and actually take away from its value.

The sling swivels are not original to the rifle and actually take away from its value. They might take away from the collector or resale value, but they add to the value for me. What I'm looking for is a classic in good condition for use, that will retain the value point it had when I bought it. PS I bought the rifle pictured, but it had a mechanical problem, so I sent it back for a refund.
