Anyone know a good way to keep an eye on a second home? Ideally I'd like to set up a camera that I could monitor on the internet, from anywhere. The camera would be hardwired for power, but would need to wirelessly feed to a modem about 30 feet away. I'd mount it under the eaves, and out of the weather so it won't need to be waterproof.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Do you mean 'modem' as in dial-up, or cable/DSL?

Why? The router can serve up DHCP on a private LAN without a problem. I have three computers and a printer set up that way off a FiOS wireless router. Are the cameras not capable of a dynamic address?

I'm pretty sure that there has to be an IP address you access just like logging onto the Campfire. Installed boo-koo static IP dsl's for cameras.....

BroBart is correct as far as I can tell. The only cameras Ive dealt with needed IPs. Youll also want some storage capacity. Cant be lookin at em all the time.

There should be some kits available for home use. All ours are on bigazzed DVRs or use a new network cam system some geeks designed for our data center.

Thanks for the suggestions. Could it be motion activated? And then save those pictures?

Yes, a camera can be motion activated. It can even be programmed to zoom in on a particular area when triggered. As for saving the video, youll need a storage device, most likely a DVR.

Dog,

With a DSL connection you won't be limited speed-wise. Dial-up would have limited you to timed photos or low-quality video.

One of the newer wiring protocols is called "powerline". It uses your household wiring as network cable, so you don't need to worry about going with wireless equipment. You plug a router into your DSL modem, and plug the camera into a wall outlet that will serve as a wired connection to the router. Done deal, no computer needed.

D-Link offers a variety of options, including free network storage.

Here's a link to the D-Life website for D-Link video and voice products.

I've been looking at these systems myself to keep track of my office.

Thanks for all the suggestions looks like there are some good options at a reasonable cost.

We just chain a couple dogs in the yard and tip the chicks at the Beer Barn to feed 'em.
