This link cleared up a ton of misinformation for me. http://www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm#diffIf this link is hoo-hah please present the facts to refute. Thanks! One thing this guy says that I did not know was the lack of overpenetration in an inside the house scenario. I also never believed the tumbling bullet theory, he explains the yaw in tissue and fragmentation etc. Phew! I could never afford a decent 308 autoloader anyhow, but I can scrape together the 800 or so for a bushy...

Logansdad:
This fellow seems to think highly of the 55 grainer cuz he says it yaws in flesh and then fragments. I had never read about that before and I really wonder if it is true. He maintains you must have 2700 fps or better for it to work.
Do you mind me asking about what you paid for your new bushy? I think I will be getting either a bushmaster or an armalite soon.

55 gr ball is ok, if it's all you can get, but the better softpoints are a far better bet, especially from the short barreled carbines that are chosen for their faster handling in CQB type situations. A sound suppressor is a tremendous aid to effective use of such rifles, both because of the lack of blast, and also the lack of flash in the dark.
Also, Jonathan Ciener offers a .22lr conversion unit for the AR, for very low cost, indoor practice at snapshooting, which can make the AR-user actually faster at hitting than is the typical cop with a pump 12 gauge.
You can get $100 Rock River Arms lowers on GunsAmerica.com, and a $400 (or so) parts kit to finish building an AR, from Model 1 Sales, in Ill. They advertise all the time in the Shotgun News, and they have a website. Model 1's upper's come fully assembled, and assembling an AR lower is a pc of cake, without any sort of special tools at all. Just remember to pad the vise, use it to help you assemble the pivot pin detent, and so on.

DixieFreedom, I don't think you will be disappointed in getting an AR-15 or M4 carbine. I've had my Bushmaster M4 A3 carbine .223 for about 4 months now and it has about 250 rounds through it. At one hundred yards open sights, the accuracy is good. For fun, I've been blasting away with armor-piercing rounds. That's mine. And I'm hoping to put this scope on it soon:

ck. out ar15.com.
more information than you'd care to know about this type of iron, and more morons flaming off at each other for no reason than i like to hear or read about, but is a wealth of information on the subject.
screen names to look out for on round fragmentation and accuracy measured scientifically and all results posted :
bouhaha tatjana
those folks understand ballistics. they have an incredible wealth of information stored under that website. ck. it out for fragmentation stuff. really interesting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the heads up on that web site. Will see if it is back up real soon.
Bottom line is this- do you believe in this theory or is it rather a proven fact? The yaw and fragment in tissue at 2700 fps theory???
Thanks again!

Green tip 5.56 ball has a steel tip, lead base and a copper jacket. Kind of like a wimpy partition with a steel instead of lead in the front. Round nose solids have a better rep for straight penitration than pointed solids. So it makes sense that the bullet would turn in path once tissue was hit. If the bullet turns once impact is made it makes sense that the bullet could come apart.

Dixie, years ago I've seen a study that included wound photos that compared the AK47 and the 5.56. The 5.56 had more tissue damage, would spoil your day to get hit with one.
Have any of you changed the trigger in your Bushmasters? I'm trying to decide between a Jewell or a JP.
