Have a friend who has a perplexing problem with a nice 20 gauge double hammer side by side Hatfield bought for him by his wife in 1988.

One of the hammer springs is broken. He had it with a local smith here in Anchorage who tried for six months to find a replacement and failing that to fabricate a hammer spring - unsuccessfully unfortunately.

He sent it to a big time east coast shotgun smith (who he can't remember offhand) who also could not find a replacement and who declined to attempt to fabricate a replacement - saying not worth the time and potential trouble if it didn't work out exactly right.

My friend says he understands all the metal work was done in Europe and only the stock (a very nice one) was done in the US.

The question: anyone know the history of the Hatfields and who might have either a replacement hammer spring or be able to fabricate one?

FWIW I have the serial # and pictures of markings on the barrels.

I had a Hatfield for a bit. It was a two bbl set ( 20 & 28)w/ a very nice maple stock.

They were attractive, but not particularly high grade, made in Italy, I believe.

That being said, I'd refer him to the
Ddouble Gun Journal website. Those guys are very knowledgeable re all things double and hammer guns in particular.
