Hunting camp rules

If there's one thing that obviously going to happen with 15 to 20 guys always with large egos hunting together for two weeks is some jealousy. Especially, if some 16-year-old or young kills a nice trophy buck opening-day. From 63 through the 80s all but two years that I served in the military every year our hunting camps were this large. Twenty guys in one camp is all that allow for a roster under Pennsylvania gaming laws and of those one-person needed to be designated as camp leader. My dad always took this role and had some very strict rules and was not flexible.

Camp rules, and these are in no particular order:

No alcohol

No women , although if our wives like to hunt they were more than welcome

No playing are handling of guns in camp , although cleaning a rifle was acceptable.

The first person to kill a deer took over as the camps cook

Participating in all rescues if needed.

I'm curious, can anyone think of anything that should be added to this list?

No alcohol

- Are freaking kidding me? Note to self, NEVER hunt with Larry Martin. A cold beer and a dip in a hot spring are great things after a long hunt.

The first person to kill a deer took over as the camps cook.

- If My buddy shot first, I'd rather starve than eat his cooking. I'll stick to manning the stove.

Last rule for our camp - If a deer is down, EVERYBODY takes a turn packing, whether it be deer or gear.

Our rule about alcohol is once you touch it during the day, you don't touch another firearm. If you do, you are out of camp permanently. Swinging a muzzle past someone will get you booted out of camp too
Even with a camp of 4--7 , you need a strong camp leader. someone has to assume that roll, and everyone has respect it.
Thisa person doesn't boss everyone around, but settles squabbles and jumps on the slackers if any.
In our camp, it's take care of the horses/mules first, morning and night, no matter how sleepy or tired you are.

1. Obey all state game laws.
2. Don't be an azzhole.
3. For all other grey areas, see rule #2.

Badger,

Good way to put it!

I hunt with 2 other guys and we have been doing it so long that it's all natural now.

It does take a thick skin though....pitching poo on each other is a given.

Our rule about alcohol is that it doesn't mix with firearms.

We pretty much save that for after dark and the chores and cooking are getting underway.
We're usually too tired to do much drinking anyway.

No alcohol till after dark and pretty much the rest is grey area- It is usually only the 3 of us (me dad and bro) but now my son comes along - he is four- just about every day he asks me to go to camp- he loves the place.

Sorry for the "book" answer- I would assume that you mean the answer is the type of answer one would expect! (not a flame )

We also have more of a tradition than a rule - you get a buck- we "kill" a bottle of Jagermeister- that night no exceptions.

Camp hopping is a bit of a tradition - driving (sober of course) from camp to camp checking out the buck poles, who owes what in the poker game- that type of thing - while we only have 3.5 in the camp it is usually round 5-7 after dark so taking in that bottle isn't too rough- but the next day sure is!!

And if you partake in the Jaggy- and havent gotten yours yet - you hunt the next day- no excuses- that would be a fate worse than missing a 12 pointer from 25 feet infront of everybody.

Our Deer Camp was originated by my hunting buddy & VERY close friend who lives north of Pittsburgh, PA and owns the cozy hunting cabin in the Moshannon State Forest in north-central Pennsylvania where we hunt.

The Deer Camp includes my buddy, my two sons who are in their early 40s plus my Godson who is just 18 and his dad who is a friend and lives a mile from me at home in Ohio and, of course, me. Were a pretty close-knit group of 6 careful hunters who have known one another and been close for many years.

My buddy is the camp boss because he owns the place, but he doesnt boss anyone around. We all pitch in when work is needed to be done and everyone gets along. There are no slackers in our camp.

We have only a few Camp Rules and they are reasonable ones:
1) Actions open & no loaded firearms inside the cabin.
2) No alcohol until the guns are put away for the day.
3) No careless handling of firearms at any time.
4) No smoking inside the cabin.
5) Everyone helps always.
6) Males ONLY. No one even considers bringing a female to Deer Camp.

I start looking forward to the next Deer Camp on my way home from the Deer Camp just concluded each year. If it gets better than that, I cant see how.

Larry,

Your Dad's rules indicate a couple things to me - he didn't trust his campmates around alcohol and firearms. In his place I would have been looking for different campmates.

We have no rules in our hunting camps, although we do have consequences for bad behavior. If somebody mishandles a firearm he would likely get dragged out to the road for the next bus. That could be a looong wait in Northern Minnesota.

If someone gets drunk that's his business. If his drunkeness jepordizes someone's safety - dragged out for the bus. If his drunkeness messes with the quality of someone's hunt, generally a punch in the nose sets things straight, and if not, dragged out for the bus.

I only hunt with honorable men and women that I would trust with my life. Trusting them with a little booze kinda pales in comparison.

Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense.

We only have 1 rule at bear camp and thats no chambered rounds until your on the stalk or ready to shoot.

Anything else goes as long as its done safely. A good bunch of guys go to camp and everybody trusts everybody.
