I realize the stupidity of this thread, but it highlighted to me what must be vastly different hunting cultures. I have hunted in many hunting camps but for the life of me I can't remember anyone giving me any rules to follow. I suppose everyone just assumed that others would use good judgement. Frankly, had someone tried to lay down some set of rules of their own devising he might very well have gotten to prove his prowess with his fists. With that said, most of the hunting I have done was on property that was under my control, or the hunt was one that I put on and invited those I wanted to participate. It never occurred to me to tell another man how to act in any of those situations.

I guess if you knew you were going to have some jerks in camp it might be necessary, but it would seem easier to leave the jerks out.

No words of mine can hope to convey to you the ringing joy and hope embodied in that spontaneous yell: The Americans are coming; at last they are coming!

I hadnt the heart to disillusion them.

To be invited into one of my dad's hunting camps, a person would need to agree with the rules in advance. I actually remember once some guy dry-fired his rifle after cleaning it and the other hunters got so upset they asked this person to leave immediately. That might sound trivial to some, but frankly I don't like hunting around idiots.

You are completely right, Teal. I suppose that is what can be so irritating about these kinds of forums. At a campfire if a guy makes an a$$hole of himself repeatedly someone might grab him up by the collar and teach him some manners, here it seems the hole just gets bolder. Makes me very suspicious about holes like this guy actually having spent much time in a hunting camp full of men, seems to me someone would have already cured him of this poor behavior.

I dunno.

Well, I waited as long as I could, but I've made Mr. Martin my first campfire ignore. Hell, I didn't even ignore DFC I just didn't pay any attention to him.

Of course, I think I'm up to about 8 ignorees on AR.

And unlike the addressee of this post, I plan on following my own advice and ignoring him or any threads he starts henceforth and forevermore.

I believe this troll is really a high school age kid (or kids) that has real talent in irritating others. Nothing more. I cannot believe that an adult man, much less a real combat veteran can be such a large a$$hole and such miniscule testicular mass.

You have to hand it to the kid though, he has a great career ahead as useful idiot, tabloid journalist.

Some of these replies can't be serious.

No loaded guns in camp? Where are you hunting? And who are you hunting with that you can't trust them with a loaded firearm?

All of the camps I've ever been in, obviously the rifles are "cleared" on the outside of camp, or before placing in a vehicle. "Cleared" means cleared and dry fired chamber. Magazines loaded is fine and is expected.

Loaded handguns are usually carried by most everyone I hunt with, and they remain loaded day and night.

Maybe it's different out east or something, but it's been this way in all the camps I've been in, in AZ, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Kalifornistan, with a lot of different people.

I've shared camps with some of the bigger names in the business (handgun side of it anyway), due to a family member's previous employ at a firearm's company in the 80's and 90's. None of this nonsense about unloaded and "put away" guns. Again, rifles were "cleared", but they weren't put away like we had a group of kids running around.

There was no "horseplay" or irresponsible handling of a firearm, but if a guy decided that he needed to clean his rifle over the campfire that night, so be it.

Jeez, the places I've hunted, you'd be looked at like you were nuts unloading all of your firearms.

Nobody ever felt the need to correct someone else. Everyone was pretty responsible.

Most of our camps called for pretty simple table fare with little clean up. I go out to enjoy sitting over a camfire, not clean dishes. Not alot of camp chores in our camps. Firewood the major one, and I always made sure there was plenty, so nobody else had to worry about that.

There was one incident with someone, who now happens to be the president of a firearms related company (who shall not be named) who shot a grouse and placed it under the pillow of another hunter and left it there for the day, to be discovered that evening. The killing of something for a joke was not looked lightly upon in the group, and he came real close to an ass kicking.

He was also not in any further camps.

Unethical hunting practices were never allowed. Game laws were followed.

Littering, defacing nature, etc., would get your butt kicked quick. Zero tolerance. With the exception of stacked unused firewood, camp was always left spotless with no evidence of anyone being there.

Generators, Tv's, radios, all out. Cell phones used to call and "check in" permitted. Off at all other times.

Other than the grouse incident, all of our camps have been "clean" and accident and incident free. Some of you must be hunting with 10 year olds, I swear.

"Cleared" means cleared and dry fired chamber."

I'm curious, before I try an answer any of your questions, I'd like to know one thing about this partial sentence. Is this the way you were taught to put a rifle a way?

Larry, I've been hunting the Colorado Rockys since 51 and all the camps I've been in just clear the chamber on rifles in camp or vehicle. Very few hunters carry a handgun while hunting in high country, except flatlanders for about one or two days. -- no

This research your doing, we had a guy here about three years ago who was a fiction writer doing the same thing and hurt many around this campfire. Anybody here remember "Dancer"? I sure as heck DO!!
