I have and hunt with a Savage 99 in .303 Savage. It's classic, retro, and yes, obsolete. I dare you to find ammo for it in any commercial outlet. I ordered some Cabela's Obsolete (that's what they called it) ammo a few years ago, and it took me over a year to get it. was over $40.00 for a box of 20. Recently I saw some Norma brass in the Midway catalog, for over $1.00 per round! Empty brass! But it's cool, and it was my Dad's.

Also have three rifles in .30-06, which is now 103 years old...

I guess I never thought of myself as "retro", 'til I saw the posts here.
My last 2 purchases were a .35 Whelen, & a 7x57! I've got 2 buddies begging to buy the latter from me, 1 of whom already has a 7mm-08.
Just last night, I was trying to talk a guy out of a M96 in 6.5x55, but it had already sold...
I never realized how many cartridges there have been out there. I've been thumbing through, "Elmer Keith's Big Game Hunting", and a lot of it sounds like Greek:

I haven't actually hunted with this one, but when going through some of my grandfather's things I found a .351 S.L.R. cartridge. Pretty oddball. Wish I had the gun that went with it.

I have a fondness for the Savage 250-3000..but its in a T/C pro Hunter. The Savage 99 in 300 savage is just to heavy in comparison.

My ex wife's dad had a 351 Win SL... and an old box of full of ammo for it, all with green brass to it... He let his 15 yr old son hunt with it... Sadly when they ran out of ammo, they just took the gun to the dump...my ex's family was like that with a lot of stuff.. it had belonged to My Father in Laws father... what a waste of a classic firearm... I didn't handload in those days tho...

I never go out in the field with out. 257 Bob, 250 3000, or 300 H&H. Like the REM 700 Classics.

I remember an article by Craig Boddington several years back about all the cartridges he thought were now deadwood. He included everything in 6.5mm. He claimed a .257 or a .277 would do everything a 6.5mm would do.
I thought you're right, Craig. We should do away with the 25's and 270's as a 6.5 will do everything they can do.
I suspect he was just trying to get a rise out of us 6.5 Looneys.

Mine is an early 1900s Win in 32-20. Has 2 deer to its credit this season already and about to leave on a hog/javelina hunt in a day or so.
