Hello All, Sometime back I ordered a 10 twist 6mm barrel from Hart to rebarrel a Model 7 Remmy. I always wanted a 6mm Rem. and now I learn the Remington uses the 1 in 9 1/4 twist. Have I messed up? I really feel a bit sick now and really thought I was ordering the right one. Any 6mm Rem shooters out there? I load my own so I could stay with the 100gr or 95gr bullets....HELP! Doug

First, Welcome to the 'Fire!
I can't imagine that a 3/4" twist difference is going to make a difference. To be honest though, I'm not a "twist" expert. Some other folks are and I'm sure they'll chime in.
I have one of each for my boys. They were both easy working up loads and within 50fps of each other. I use 85gr TSXs with IMR4895 in the 243 and RL19 in the 6mmRem. The 6mmRem is VERY tight in the Rem 600 magazine. I have to load to SAMMI OAL or the bullet is too long for fit in the mag. 243 has no such problems.

No you have not mess up. Almost all .243's are 1 in 10 twist which use the same bullets as the 6MM.Rem. Actually this is the correct twist if you want to shoot 100gr. bullets The 1 in 10 twist is just fine for lighter bullets as well. If your new 6mm doesn't shoot 75gr to 100gr.bullets well it isn't the 1 in 10 twist fault.

Nope you didn't mess up, the 10 will work with 55's-100's with no problemo.

The 6mm is a pretty good round, I prefer it over the 243. As a reloader, you can take advantage of the narrow margin of improvement the 6mm is capable of producing. My experience with the 95 gr Partition was entirely satisfactory on whitetails, tho' limited.

My little expierence has been same a himmelrr's. I load for 2 700 243's and one 700 6mm. The 243's have more room in magazine box. Course the 6mm shoots lights out so I don't guess it matters.

If You could check the loading manuals you would find that the 6mm rem is only 100 fps behing the 240 Weatherby. The brass is much easier and cheaper to come by. .243 is a great round but I think I might give the 6mm rem the nodd.

If you reload, 6mm with a 1:10 is the way to go over the .243. I'm clocking 3245fps with 45gr imr4350 behind a 90gr Scirocco, shoots tiny little groups. From my experience, If you don't reload, you'll be hard pressed to find any boxes of ammo other than 100gr Rem Core-Lokt and 100gr Hdy SST's for the 6mm. I haven't seen anything else on the shelves.

I have a 1 in 9 1/2" and have trouble with the 105 speer keyholing not all shots keyhole but let say 2 out of 6 rounds will.I been reading and found a increase of fps may help:I am using IMR 4350 with 41 grains and my reloading manual shows 42.0 grains to be max load.I also seen a tad higher on the powder charge to 43.5 here http://www.realguns.com/loads/243.htm

243 Catbird, a Kenny J. number. Pretty much a 6mm-06 loaded to (or above ) the gills.

Yeah I know that, I've been running a 6/06 for years now, just not able to sort out the response and how it relates to the guys question about a 243 or a 6 for his Mod 7.
I must be missing something here and are too darn slow to sort it out.

As much as I like a challenge, fitting a 24/06 into a M7 would be a bit over my head...grin

Thanks to All! I never expected such a number of response and good ones at that. I'll keep informed as to what way I go. Doug

I have experience with both the 6mm Rem and the 243 Win. The two cartridges are very close in all areas cept one. If you plan on shooting and reloading your new rifle a lot then I would go with the 6mm Rem. I like my 243 win just fine but the pita with it is the shoulder causes the necks to grow pretty fast so you constantly find yourself trimming the necks. Least thats been my experience. My 243 is a Tikka M-55 and it has a 1 in 9.25 IIRC it will shoot lites out with all bullet weights cept 60 gr and below.
