Hello all,
I've been reading through the posts here and this looks like a great group. I've had several Savages in the collection for many years but they were all stamped "U.S. Property" and chambered in .303 British.
In the last couple of years I've started hunting again and added a cople of 99's to the collection. I've bought Murray's book and been through it but I've still got a couple of questions.
First up is my post-mil 99A saddle gun. I'm trying to pin down the DOM as best I can. The gun is in .243, blued with a color case-hardened lever. The serial number is C555XXX. I'm guessing it's from the early part of the run, 1971-74. Can anyone get it any closer than that?
The second is what I think is a pre-mil 99E. It's a straight stock, 24" barrel in .300Savage. The serial number is 239XXX which should be 1922. The barrel is tapered with an integral front sight base. Rear (middle) sight is the adjustable (for elevation) flat top. What is not standard (at least per Murray) is the receiver stamp. It is Savage over 1899 Model. From what I've described do you think I have this labeled correctly as a 99E? Some one has filed the front sight blade to a knife edge. I'd like to find an original style blade for the sight.
I'm also looking for any model 99 receiver assembly in .300Savage for a project. The ideal donor would be a rifle with a shot out or damaged barrel.
If I can provide any info on Savage produced Lee-Enfields I have some experience there.
Thanks all.

The 99E sounds correct, and don't worry about the stamp saying 1899. That continued for a while but it's still known as a 99E.
Welcome to the forum! Somebody will jump in and narrow down the 99A pretty soon, I don't have my notes at work.

Welcome to the Forum. According to my records, your post-mil 99A saddle gun was made in 1977. The letter series (A through G) Model 99s were made AFTER Savage moved its manufacturing facilities from Chicopee Falls, MA. to Westfield, MA in 1960. Strength & Honor... Ron T.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

Ron,
Did Savage start at 001 when they changed the alpha prefixes? In other words, there were 555,000 or more C prefix firearms? DonW
