I got the call last night from my son. They are allowed to call family 24 hours before departing on a cruise. He's on a boomer, and will be out at least through July, maybe longer. At least this is his last cruise, and he will be assigned to shore duty upon return.

It sure makes for a long three months, as they don't get a chance to call, but once in a while they can e-mail messages. I sure miss talking with him every weekend when he is out. Hope that all is well with him, his boat, along with the rest of the Navy and other armed forces away from home.

Take pride in the fact that he is doing his duty and not running off to hide and whine somewhere. You raised him right. Fly the flag proud till he comes home safe.

Well a boomer huh - I always wanted to go for a ride but I never wanted to be a full time bubble head! From what I have seen of the silent service they really are shipmates and everyone will be fine. Whats his rating?

Hang in there and I am sure he will be back soon- BTW any idea where his next duty station is yet?

Everyone, thanks for the good wishes, he certainly is a really good young man who I am very proud of.

Teal, my son is an E4 sonar tech. He is hoping to go to Hawaii for his next duty station, as he really is into surfing, even started building his own boards. He also is considering Guam, as they currently have some openings for his rate. I'm hoping for Hawaii, as it would give me an excuse to go there when it's -25 degrees in January.

I really want to get out to Washington and do some hunting with him, but I have two daughters still in school, and that makes things difficult. I still have his X-mas present here, a 7mm Mag that he has not even seen yet. I thought it would be just the ticket for out west.

Hope he doesn't read the campfire, or you just blew the surprise!

Pass along our thanks for is service to our nation, and we'll be keeping him and his fellow crew members in our prayers.

I have worked all over the world with Navy vets, and the bubble heads were always the best trained and the most well adjusted. God bless your son!

Those guys have to be well adjusted- no daylight for weeks on end!

I had a bubble head chief when I was in training- said there were 2 types of boats - subs and targets.

Rick,

I spent a day on Guam last year (and over a week on a smaller island farther north in the same chain - the Marianas). From what I saw, there's probably not much surfing on Guam, but the scuba diving in that area of the Pacific can be very good. I could be wrong, but from what I'm remembering, the surfing there is probably good (relative to Hawaii) only when there's a storm system coming through (which they get a few times a year).

Best wishes to your son. I know you'll be glad to have him back home.

Thanks to all, I will pass along the wishes next time I can send e-mail to him.

As for the 7mm mag, I told him about it at x-mas. He was supposed to be home for the holiday, but the senior chief on his boat recommended him for advance sonar tech school. It ran the same time he was scheduled to come home. He was the only e-4 recommended for the class, the rest being e-5's, so he couldn't turn it down.

I was going to send the rifle out to him, but he wants to wait until he has it at his own place off base, that way he doesn't have to keep it at the armory.

Rick- Godspeed to your son, his crew, and all our men and women in uniform. With the Good Lord Willing, he'll be home safe and sound, enjoying another hunt with you very soon. I hope he appreciates you as much as you obviously miss him. Best wishes, Jeff
