There is a Remington Mohawk 48 Semi in good condition I want to buy and restore. Problem is, the previous owner carved his name in the receiver like an idiot. Not near or over any markings or engraving. I think I can grind it out until smooth with sandpaper & steel wool then re-blue. Shop is asking 150.00 but I am going to offer 100.00 cash . Appropriate or not?

From what you are describing I wouldn't spend more than $75.00 for such a project gun.

Rogmatt I had a mod 48 and it was the most unreliable shotgun I ever owned, a real piece of s&*t. Free is too expensive. When it cycles a round the barrel moves back and forth with the bolt and over a period of time it severly damages the barrel lugs where they lock to the bolt. It has bolt arms that go back into a hole in the stock that sometimes can exit the hole makeing the whole action lock up requireing dismantleing the butt stock to free the action. I personally would rather have a cheap single shot. I would certainly check the barrel lugs for wear and remove the butt stock to see if there is any damage around the hole for the bolt arms. If you grab the bolt lever and pull straight out the lever will come out in your hand, it is only held in with a detent for a ball bearing and with wear it can fly off in the field so a spare is usually necessaty. I have a 48 that was left on top of a van. It fell off at over 35 mph, was hit by a truck, then left in a garage for ten years. All I did was replace the cracked forearm, cut two inches of the dinged barrel off, then replaced the bead sight. Of course, the choke was in the two inches of barrel I cut off. So its a cylinder bore now...
