I found a Model 70 winchester Stainless synthetic with the claw extractor in 300 Rem Ultra mag at a shop in Idaho Falls last night. It looked like a good rifle so I picked it up. I haven't seen too many of these in that caliber. Is it a good combination? Do the ultras work well in that action?

Should be a good rifle.. The round will make you fully aware of a factor called 'recoil'...

The round has plenty of power for most anything you'll ever hunt in NA...

I've had several owners come in with those and have me install muzzle brakes.. Just FYI.. laugh laugh

BB-nice snag, that rig is one of the few M70's and one of the few 30 cals that I find interesting.

Hope it shoots like a drill for you, mt experience with 700/300 RUM's has been that they are big time accurate.

BB -- you have just purchased the perfect rifle to convert to .404 Jeffrey. No way would I leave that thing a boring old .300 when it could be chambered to a completely wonderful and legendary round. Add express sights and you have the rifle to take when you go back to Africa grin.

I'm excited to see how it shoots. No way I'm putting a noise maker on it. I've been shooting some stiff loads in my 375 rugers lately and I've been OK with the recoil. Although I do recall the ultras having a sharp jab to them.

I haven't caught the Jeffrey bug yet but I'm not saying it'll never happen.

Maybe the ultimate long range sporter elk rifle.

Neat rifle, what scope will go on it?

I bought one used last spring and had the barrel and stock yanked off. Had a fluted #3 pac-nor barrel screwed on and dropped the barrel action into a Mickey EDGE super grade stock. Feeding is excellent and smooth. Shoots even better and it works on bears! At least one so far...

I started with a Sendero in 300 RUM many years ago and put a brake on it. After shooting it for a few years, I loved the cartridge, but disliked the weight of the rifle. I now shoot an semi-custom 8 lb M700 300 RUM with sporter barrel and no brake. I bedded it into a custom LOP Bansners stock with a 1" pac decel recoil pad that mitigates recoil extremely well - it is a total dream to shoot. My go-to #1 rifle that has accounted for my best whitetail, two best mule deer and my best elk.

I had one for about 48 hours; I lasted through one box of factory ammo, and decided neither the animal nor I deserved nor required that much punishment smile

I dropped back to the mild, sedate 300 Weatherby and my life has been more pleasant ever since. Nice rifle, though, hard to find and no doubt does the job on about anything if you can handle it...I can't.

I'm with muledeer above - I'd have to go with the 404 Jeff if I had a M70 in the RUM. Saw the one being offered in the classifieds and wished I could afford it just to do the conversion. Part of my reason for doing such a conversion is that I agree with Bob, the .300 Weatherby is more than fast enough in a .30 caliber for me. Plus, I would see no reason to have a .300 Weatherby and a .300 RUM.

My buds 70 seems to feed a bit better than my 700 so I'd say your good in that area. I say see how it shoots and go from there. Remember that a good recoil pad makes all the difference. My 700 RUM is just shy of 8Lbs with an empty belly and 168TTSX's @ 3450 and 180 Accu's @ 3350 don't bother me....but it wears a Limbsavers.

Good luck....hope it shoots for ya,

Brett

Another conversion could be into the 7mm RUM in a 28" barrel for a Sendero style rifle.

LMAO...

Funny, but my hardest kicking rifle is my M70 SS/walnut classic in .300WM.. I've not been bothered by anything else up to and including the .375H&H.. I've got a .416RM and a .458WM I haven't shot yet, so maybe that's where my tolerance ends.. laugh laugh

Redneck: A man's gotta know his limitations......mine are lower than they used to be. My 375 is like a gentle massage compared to the 300RUM.Touch it off and there was just noise, commotion and flying debris, accompanied by neck-snapping sensations.....the entire affair was a masochistic exercise. The 300 RUM seperates the men from the boys....the men go home grin

Well, I can find out today if I want to.. I obtained a M70 Classic SS in .300RUM for a customer and it arrived yesterday.. I'll be tearing it down today for a thorough inspection/cleaning and then I just may load a couple in the mag and see what this hoss can do..

Apparently I caught a cold yesterday somehow and I'm feeling like crap (first cold I've had in years) so maybe I won't even notice the recoil... laugh

LMAO.
I sat behind a rather lightish version in 300RUM once.....just once.

No doubt some find it manageable.....no doubting its' capabilities, but I think that, like the 30-378,it's a bit much of a good thing.
