I have a project that I have been pestering away at over the past several winters. It is an octagon barreled 35 Whelen using a LH MRC action and about as good a piece of wood as I am likely to ever use. Yesterday I took it to the range to regulate the open sights, which involved filing down the notch in the sights so that it hit at point of aim. My eyes aren't nearly as good as they once were, so I figured that point blank (50 yards) for the standing leaf and 150 for the folding leaf were as optimistic as I could be (no way am I taking open sighted shots at 200 yards any more.) I had done preliminary filing at home, using the boresighting technique on the neighbor's mail box. First shot at the range went about 3" high, and then careful filing brought it down until shots 4 & 5 were on the money. The standing leaf is still too high, given that it is shooting about 10" high. But this is not like adjusting a scope where you can just turn the dial back. Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!
