I'm not a regular on the list but have benefited from the information here. I would appreciate it if some folks could help me on an .22 rifle ID. The pictures show a slide action .22 (still working on the forearm) that is only marked "Premier". I think it might be the Sears "house brand" but made by Savage (It looks like Model 25 to me but I am not sure). It's not in very good shape (except the bore) but has fun to try and get working again. Any info appreciated.

Bob,

Welcome! Yes, Savage model 25. Doesn't look so bad to me.

Bob,

I think it's the later model 25 since it looks like yours has two fore end screws. Earlier 25's had a single screw. What is the serial number? X out the last two digits.

Thanks Bob. The K indicates it was built as a house brand. If it were Savage marked there would have been an L after the SN. Model 25 were preceded by the model 1914 and succeded by the 29, introduced in 1929.

I also have seen several house brands based on the model 25, has anyone ever seen a model 1914 based house brand? Gene

Thanks to all that helped out on the ID. The forearm was badly broken and I have tried to get it back together. One that was sold to me as a Model 25 with two holes does not really fit. The two holes do not line up with the slide but I may end up using it with one screw until something better comes along.

You didn't get the one that was on eBay ending about the 18th? It was the forearm and action rod together? I was watching that but didn't bid, it was for a Marlin model 20 and I could have used the action rod. Marlin forearm

Couldn't find a house brand for the model 1914 but I thought this one was pretty neat. Anyone ever seen one?

I have been looking for one of them for over 3 years now Joe. There is not a stone that I have not turned over. I'm thinking that maybe they were never actually produced...!!!

Mike...

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I have 2 early model 25 based house brands that have serial numbers in the low 5000 range (I would think 1st year production). That had made me think it is was possible they made some 1914 house brands but they do not seem to exsist. Maybe they didn't start making any until the model 25.

As for the wood I have a very rough refinished Premier with some fantastic wood - it's sanded way under size. The wood is much better than any I have seen on a Savage stamped version.

Another note on the Model 25 based Premiers, I have never seen a low serial numbered version or even one with the early style action rod and frearm. I know Mossberg made Premiers before Savage based on the Meriden Model 15 design which they had gotten the rights to.

Premier serial number 11256K with stock and butt plate matching. Note the lack of a forearm, that design with screws only on one side was not the best.

I think it was RAM that posted a picture of one years ago. It may still be found by searching. Can't remember if he posted it or questioned it but I do remember the pic. confused
