Ya but why would you care about the finish wear if you said that they're aren't enough fools out there?
That would mean you were looking for a collector grade rifle!

There is something about a well worn rifle that cranks my tractor, maybe because it's been used and has character. I love to hunt with classic and weird stuff and if it's used, all the better... Catnthehat
scopes are cool, but slings 'n' irons RULE!

Lets be honest here. We are all looking for collector grade rifles. I don't think there is a person on this forum who - when buying a 99 - does not want to buy all original, and the best condition that his personal economics allow. Yes, we are all probably hunters also, and so realize that we are going to have some wear on our rifles - or that we may own a couple or more rifles that we will take to the woods each year. However, we still take extreme care with them, respect them, and try to keep them in their original conditon. Hell, if you just want a rifle to "bubba up" there are a lot of other cheaper rifles than a Savage 99 to do that to!!!
As for the argument that these rifles are not going to have increasing value in years to come - well thats just B.S. I have admired Savage 99's since a lad in the fifty's - when I used to go into all the local hardware stores and peruse the gun racks. The new price then is probably 10-20% of the used price now! I started accumulating a few 15+ years ago when the family budget had a few extra bucks. The return on my investment is better on the 99's then most other investments I have owned.........Plus, I never bought them for an investment, but rather as a hobby - for the joy of owning & learning about one of the most revolutionary firearms of all time (IMO). I submit this commentary with the full realization that I will probably be attacked from every direction.

Hi Craig. To answer your question, Jim Cloward is a top notch rifle maker and gunsmith. Washington State is fortunate to have him as a resident for many, many years, and I would bet my life on his rifle work. He is a gunsmith, stockmaker, riflemaker, and is in most every 1,000 meter shooting record book.
A simple D&T runs about $50. Add some mounts and bore sighting and it will cost you about $100 for the complete job. People send him gunwork from around the world. He's good people. You won't go wrong there. Give him a call. Good luck to you.
Cloward's Gun Shop 13822 Meridian Street Lake Stevens, WA 98258 1-425-334-3006
p.s. you own that gun, and they're your eyes. Do what you need to do to keep shooting.

If you have to scope it in order to continue to enjoy it then I would scope it. My Dad had an old 300 savage with a scope and I thought it was the neatest gun ever.

You got that right! I am glad you finally got a solid answer to your question. It's funny how people put words into your mouth because I didn't say sh*t about 99's not increasing in value.
I said:
"Hell, these "original" 99's are never going to bring the money these "savage collector's" think they are; not in their lifetime anyway and if so then what does it matter your dead. Too many visions of grandeur and not enough fools out there."
In layman's terms:
IMO I don't think there are enough people out there that are willing to pay the over inflated prices that are on the original 99's.
I didn't mean to piss in anybody's Cheerios.

I suppose 30 yrs ago the same was said about Winchesters,by the nay sayers.I'll keep on buying the best Savages i can find.I have a new house I built from selling nice Savages. And yes,I've made a bundle off um.I suppose i should keep my big yap shut and let you go on about how little value they will retain. And laugh all the way to the bank. The stuff w/condition will always bring the long dollar...Nuff Sed
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
