I feel like I just won the lottery. Successful for Unit 27 Muzzleloader...with one bonus point. End of Sept thru 1st of Oct could be the tail end of a rut hunt right? Need to order maps and get busy studying. I'm a DIY backpack hunter so if you're familiar with the unit, please drop me a note. After some homework, I'd love to ask you some questions about my general areas of interest - hunter traffic, access, game high or low, etc. What a great day!

Buddy you should expect a great hunt. My friend George guided up there last year and you should see the video and pics of some of the bulls he chased with clients.

My buddy Darren had an archery tag and scored on a nice bull.

You should have a great time up there and see a lot of good bulls to shoot.

If you need a guide or any help, let me know. I might be able to put you in contact with George and I know he will put you on some good bulls.

BTW get in shape and get some good boots. The terrain is steep and the days get long. A lot of glassing, walking, stalking and calling. The terrain will tire you out, but the reward will be worth it if you hang on and be patient.

Enrique,

That's great to hear. Thanks for the feedback. I prefer DIY hunts but I may consider hiring a guide this time around to make sure I take advantage of this tag. If you have contact info for George and think he wouldn't mind corresponding via email or phone, please send his info via PM.

Thanks,
Brad

I've hunted for bull elk 5 times in 27. I also had land there. Weather should be nice, but you never know. In some places you'll be at 9000'. Also expect rough country. It's some of the most beautiful country I've seen.

Horses, or mules would be a plus. On horseback it will take you back away from the crowds.

Interesting that the last post was filed by Strayhorse. That's the name of a campground under the rim just south of Hannagan Meadow that you could start your backpack hunt from. There are horse corrals there, and you may be able to hire someone to pack out your bull. You'll find elk on both sides of the state road. Hunt the little canyons away from the main horse trails to avoid competition.

It shouldn't be too crowded as I said. You're during the muzz hunt.

Bill has a good starting point.

Right at the very top of the unit west of Alpine would be my first look.
9,100 feet elevation, also the highest part of the unit.

There is a ridge that runs east to west, south of road 249
Take a left on road 276. Hunt east of the road

Those 9,000 foot Ridges hold lots of elk.

I kilt a couple thar.
