It's well known that McMillan makes their stocks so your barrel is free floated. McMillan's standard tolerance for the channel is .060" total or .030" per side between stock/barrel. I just ordered my first McMillan not too long ago. How is the .030" per side fit? Is there anyone that wished they would have specified a tighter fit? If McMillan has your barreled action they will run a special program if a customer wants a tighter fit say .020" or .015" gap.

They'll do whatever you're willing to pay for!

I should be more specific, it won't cost me anymore money. My barrel on this rifle already has a custom contour. They are already charging me $50 extra for the custom CNC program. Going with a tighter tolerance won't change the price.

no worries then. if you want it smaller they'll do it all you have to do is ask. I've never had any problems with the .030 fit. normally pretty tight.

I sent my barreled action to them. They fitted as requested.
No worries. Great service.

So has anyone specified a different tolerance in the barrel channel and what was it?

Standard .030 works for me. Only way I would want less clearance would be to FL bed it.
Now with even more aplomb

Other than aesthetics, I can't see any reason to have a real snug fit. Actually I tend to like having a bit more space between the barrel and stock.

I wouldn't recommend going with a tighter fit around your barrel. You want your barrel completely free floated, you don't want it touching the stock at all.
