Hello guys,
I'm sure you have seen this question many times but my search only yielded a few responses. Have a rough idea of what I'm looking at. However, I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask again concerning this specific rifle.
It's a Winchester Mod. 94 chambered in .30-30 WCF. My father bought it for my mother as an anniversary gift in the early 70's. He bought it from a friend for $100 and a week later his friend wanted to buy it back for $250. I do know its a pre-64 but I'd like to dig a little deeper. The serial number is in the really low 1,000,000's. Don't have it with me at the moment, so I don't have the exact numbers. I'd say condition is between 85-95% depending on who looks at it. It's missing some of the bluing on the receiver from being handled so much over the years. The wood is in nice shape and the gun is still all original. It is a family heirloom and will be handed down to my 5 year old son in the future. Short of sentimental value, what is this rifle worth generally?
Will be upgrading our insurance policies and would like to make sure I've got enough to replace if there is ever a fire. Thanks for your help.
Kelly

Thanks. I'll take a look. Searching the net I've gotten some rough dates of manufacture. Seems like Pre war might be a possibility. Which some collectors find more valuable. Just want to learn more about it and insure it properly. Appreciate the help.

Around here, (we're poor folk ya' know), people are asking, and sometimes getting, $500.00 and more for just plain Model 94's. Pre '64's bring higher prices, from around $700 on up depending on shape. Model 1894's are the next group stepping th price up and those made before 1929 are in an even higher price group
S/N's around 1,000,000 are certainly pre 64 but probably not in the pre 1929 group.
If they appear newer rather than older they will also bring a premium.
If it's in decent shape I'd probably insure it for around $800.00

the older ones say 30 WCF and many don't know that is the 30-30. Saw one bring about 500$ here not long ago.

If it has tang markings(WINCHESTER logo stamped on the tang) and a checkered hammer spur, it is a "pre-war". Pre-war serial numbers would be earlier than 1,350,000. I'd say it's worth around $500, provided it's still original.

Thanks for the replies. They are appreciated. Having dug deeper and found a few places to run the serial number, I've since found that this rifle was made in 1945. It is stamped with the. 30WCF, and was graded in the 90-95% catagory. I'm thinking the $800 figure for insurance is about inline from what I've learned.
The rifle has more sentimental value than historical for the most part. The Mod. 94's are abundant everywhere you go. However, I do enjoy the sentimental value and this rifle will be passed to my son upon his granmother's passing. In the mean time it will reside in my safe and I may possibly take it out for a hunt or two. Thanks for the help and suggestions.
