I picked up this old FN in 270 a few years ago at a decent price. I like to buy guns and see how they shoot.

[Linked Image]

Its really too heavy for me to hunt with and I have other rifles anyway. It goes 9.2 pounds with a scope. I brought it to a gunshop this afternoon and they estimated that it might sell for $500 (without the scope).

It has some rust pits on the left side if the barrel near the end and an old pad.

They are heavy, as rifles were in that era. I own several FN sporters. They shoot well.

If yours shoots well, just sell it and try something new.
If it is not accurate for some reason (barrel shot out), rebarrel it to .338-06 or .35 Whelen, where the weight is appreciated.

if it's that heavy and you have the $$$,

I would rebarrel it and turn it into a sniper/prariedog/varmint gun.
put a nice comfy stock and a bipod on it and you have fixed position death ray.

I had one just like it, and sold it. Who needs a 9# 270?

You could rebarrel it, but that would be a money losing propostion.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

funny thing is guys hunted harder with those so called heavy rifles back in the day, there were no 4 wheelers to carry people around, if you read this site you would think most guys around here are too woosie to carry a rifle over 7.5#'s I say man up

if your not going to hunt with it, and don't want another safe queen, sell it.

I sold one not too long ago for $625 and used the money to buy a Kimber 8400 .270 WSM. I see them listed at much higher prices, but this is what I was willing to wait for. Nice old rifle, but very heavy for caliber. Thought about turning it into something else heavier caliber, but I have that route pretty covered already.

Sell it, the action alone is worth 350-400. I think everyone needs a 9# .270 to loan to people who can't shoot worth a darn with their 5# custom rifles grin

I agree 110% with cumminscowboy. Take the weight off of your butt and not your rifle.

Kinda reminds me of the "13th Warrior" movie where the main charater complains that the sword is too heavy and his Norseman friend says "grow stronger"

+1.

9# is a bit much for a 270, but it's just about right for the 35 Whelen/9.3x62 class. Double if you keep it as an iron-sight gun, since it's already stocked for that.

To all,

Thanks for the comments. I don't want to admit it but I am older now and not as strong as I used to be. At seventy years I am lucky to be alive in fact.

There was a day when I could run three miles in 15 minutes. I went hunting yesterday and it was an effort to walk three miles. I did see three flocks of turkeys, which are not in season yet, with some making a fan.

I carried a Kimber 84M for coyotes.

I have four .358 Wins and two 375's.

I may put it out on consignment for maybe $550. What with the pitting on the outside of the barrel and its two position safety its not perfect.

Make a dedicated "Prairie goat" rifle out of it. It would seem to me about perfect for that.

I have a pre-64 model 70 that weighs in that range and I agree I won't pack it up in the hills but it is perfect for hunting those speedy goats. wink

It's a commercial Mauser, correct? I'm looking for a good Mauser action for a custom job. If you have any more pictures of it, I might just take it off your hands.
