Dober,

"One Man's Wilderness" is no doubt a first class adventure. There was a man with some serious outdoor "skills." As soon as a friend returns my copy, I plan on reading it again.

Rural Doc, I won't argue that on the 165/308 vs 708/140, but they both do fine in a pinch. A 154 roundnose, as unsexy as it is will likely do a bang up job up close, in a 7/08, giving fast initial expansion. My 708 woods kills inc. 139 Hornady, 140 btip, 140 Sierra BTSP, and in the open also used 130 Sierra SSP (now disc.), the btip did ruin a shoulder, and a Hornady 139 exited a Mulie neck, it re-entered a ham and that was a 'had to shoot now/lose an opportunity) as my 4x at around 115 yds did not let me notice a sapling on the first shot, deflected my shot and the deer was then facing me, hind end higher up.....common distance any deer went after a 708 hit was 15-30 yds, if not in tracks. I also prefer exits in the woods, ESPECIALLY in the evening hunts. An Accubond likely will dig deeper than a Btip. 120 TSX might outdo that one yet, if you need it.

As to one poster here, I guess he does not get it. I am not going to get in a pissing contest w/anyone, so I won't 'TryHim' as he seems to want to pick a 'Gunfight' LOL. I respect others experiences and opinions, but I have NO respect for those who are disrespectful and condescending to everyone who is not regurgitating their own thoughts/opinions, regardless if their 'Gack quotes' are factual.

It is immature and pointless.

'boy says:

"Dead is dead".

While a lovely sentiment,it do not begin to scratch the surface. Today's over the counter wares(rifle/mounts/glass/bino's/LRF's/bullets/powder/etc.),open up a realm of opportunity, that once couldn't have been fathomed in the wildest of dreams.

For that reason and a host of others, all things is not equal and that doesn't incorporate Season, bag limit, pressure and a myriad of other variables that have yet to be extrapolated to Today. The World's GREATEST Passenger Pigeon double,is utterly worthless Today for that role.

The astute have always gravitated to exceptional wares,no matter their time slot in History and to think a sharp individual would hint that a 303 was an "advantage" Today is sheer folly.

Today's 7-08 has more ass than poor Eleanor's '06 did back then. Why? Boolits, pure and simple.

I do not know anyone with a clue,who Hunts a 270 or '06 over the 7-08.

Good bullets are never a concession, but when someone waxes eloquent on the days of yore and extrapolates same as a terminal affects trump card,it is only fair to extrapolate in kind.

Trouble is,Joe Average hasn't seen/done [bleep] and is very much outta the loop,so is very succeptable to a nudge in most any direction.

I've long said all my '06's are stamped 7-08,though that too goes over many heads.

Just givin' you a jab, BS. grin
A guy could do a lot worse than a 7-08 for most stuff. It's still the #1 cartridge that I recommend.

How have you been? You sure did liven' it up around here again. laugh

I savvied the thrust and just looked to put it in context for them that didn't.

More than a few window lickers closed their yaps, that's for sure.

I have hunted a lot with rifles in 270,280,and 30-06. While the 280 is my favorite, there is really not a lot of difference between what they do in the field.

In my magnum phase which isn't completely over,I have done the same thing with 270,7mm,and 300 magnums. Again not a lot of difference in their effect on the life support system of a critter.

In actual shooting at steel, the 270s will do most anything with 140 accubonds that the 7mms will do with 160 accubonds in terms of trajectory and wind resistance. The 30s with 180 accubonds do not shoot as flat or resist wind as well. But all kill well. I killed a very big boar a couple of weeks ago with my 30-06 with a 180 accubond at about 200 yards. Bang Flop. The hog never knew what hit him.

There is nothing wrong with the 270 and 30-06.

If one is contented to tote something shy of 280 abilities, the 270 and '06 will certainly fill those roles.
