+1 on the noise.

I appreciate a little more length (and slightly more heft) to balance a bit more out front on the tube. 21-22 with a #2 and a light stock does it just right for me. The better the rest, the less this point comes up.....but off hand the forward balance makes a big difference in my shooting (even up close).

My pole-vault over the mouse turds:

-Trajectory differences twixt 7-08 and .308 are a non-issue. Compensation is necessary and easy, either way, out past XXX yards.

-Energy differences twixt the two are even less of an issue.

-Recoil differences twixt the two are a non-issue; if you can shoot one, you can shoot the other.

-They come in the same rifles, so that's a non-issue.

They are very very similar, they do the same thing practically speaking. Flip a damn coin, go hunting. Getting the time off, and $$, and tags, and hunting partners all together is the hard part, not deciding between two nearly identical cartridges.

Either one benefits greatly, by being necked up to .35 and headstamped .358! :-) My .358 was a 7-08 for a half-dozen deer, and has killed a half dozen as a .358. The .358 is mo' betta'.

For anything bigger than deer, I'll use a bigger rifle than a 7-08 or a .308 anyway. Why? Because I can and it makes me happy.

OTOH, a careful reloader can make the 308 Win a lot like a 358 Win with the use of 220 partitions and the like (especially if you've got a long magazine and throat) - or - he can make the 308 Win a lot like a 270 Win with the 130 TSX. (243+358)/2 = 300.5 Being right in the middle of the pack isn't such a bad thing, I think. One of the reasons the 308 excells as a 'jack-of-all-trades' sort of round.

I could love a .308, no question. In fact I HAVE; I've owned... 4 or 5 of them, currently just have one though.

I think Brad's solution to the whole fuggin' thing- a Kimber Montana in .308, and one in .300 WSM- makes all kinda sense. If I were starting all over and just wanted two rifles, I'd think hard about doing it that way.

I'm not sure that a 220-gn 30 cal is really "the same" as (say) a 225-gn .35 cal, though. Those are quite different bullets there. The .35 really hits hard, has a lot of "smack". The 30-cal 220 is going to penetrate like crazy though, one would think.

I sure like my .308 Montana.
Easiest carrying rifle I have ever owned.

Sounds reasonable, though I'd leave out the 8400 as an unnecessary redundancy.

IIRC Brad has rethunk his options and the 300 WSM went down the road, for a M70 .30-06...

IMO, all of those (308, 30-06, 300WSM) are similar enough that they make good 'spares' for each other, but not really needed for different jobs.

Balance can come at most any barrel length,if one is inclined, but noise is tough to skirt.

I chopped/hacked/sculpted my 600 308's stock to improve both balance and handling. Connecting on things was the very least of my concerns.

Funny, the TSX have all been great for me.

But the Blue Meanies (XLC) showed pressure signed early no matter what I did.

I much appreciate the TSXs (and VLDs) though.

I love the XLC's.

Never seen one secondfiddle in the speed department, though cup/cores obturate differently and may or may not require a different powder charge to eek XLC pressures.

A 18.5" 5-pounder can be butt heavy,neutral or nose heavy,just as a 18.5" 10-pounder can.

All of it easily arranged,as per whim.
