Though I've owned 3 new 870 express deer guns over the past
30 years with complete reliability, I'm considering a maverick
12 gauge with the sighted deer barrel. The 870 now in Canada
has increased from $329. to $400. due to the dollar, and the
maverick is $239, but I need some hands on comments for life
and death reliability.

I had a teacher (co-worker) at school today ask me about getting a cheap shotgun for Turkey , dove hunting etc.. light work mostly. We saw online the basic maverick Pumper in black synthetic for $160 at Academy. About $100 less than the 870. Thinking it might not be a bad first shotgun and if he finds himself hunting more.. get a good semi auto like a browning or beretta. So I am curious too about any maverick experiences.

The Maverick is just a Mossberg M500 in a slightly cheaper model..

They're ok as work-a-day firearms and will do the job.. Triggers are terrible (as are most shotguns) and the shell latch/action bar interfaces will wear and become inoperable after a time but they can be repaired once or twice before replacement becomes necessary..

As redneck said they are not the gun to take hunting everyday.Will they work yes for a while.You are alot further ahead with the rem 870

I will pass that along to this teacher that was asking. My brothers both had cheap mossbergs pumps 35-40 years ago. Always seemed to work.
