Hey Calvin, since you are here, what's your opinion? Is there a practical field difference between 7mm-08 and .308? Hmmm?

Can't speak to that, but the below is "as true as it gets"...

-Recoil differences twixt the two are a non-issue; if you can shoot one, you can shoot the other.

-They come in the same rifles, so that's a non-issue.

They are very very similar, they do the same thing practically speaking. Flip a damn coin, go hunting. Getting the time off, and $$, and tags, and hunting partners all together is the hard part, not deciding between two nearly identical cartridges.

Either one benefits greatly, by being necked up to .35 and headstamped .358! :-) My .358 was a 7-08 for a half-dozen deer, and has killed a half dozen as a .358. The .358 is mo' betta'.

For anything bigger than deer, I'll use a bigger rifle than a 7-08 or a .308 anyway. Why? Because I can and it makes me happy.

I've never owned a .308 or shot one. Can't say.

Wow, how'd you manage that? Damn things are everywhere.

I don't even like .308 that much and I've owned 4 or 5 of them <g>...

Oh, be sure and tell the lurkers that it only took 7 years of elk hunting before you actually killed one. That will give them confidence in your skills.

There are piles of Bushnell and Tasco scopes around too, but that doesn't mean I want to use one ...

I would say that this thread emphasizes less about skill and more about behavior. A man's skill level can improve with practice, but being an arsehole is a trait that many seem to possess for a lifetime...

Have you done it, Calvin? By your logic above, if you haven't done it, you shouldn't comment on it. Just sayin'...

I'm not going to make wild azz guesses about the .308 as I don't have any experience with it.

Everybody knows it takes a complete dumbphuck to not be successful for 7 seasons no matter what you are doing.

To be fair, you did pass on that elk at 280 yards because you were afraid and didn't have the confidence that you could hit it in the chest..

You don't know chit about hunting elk in Oregon, and you are just making that clearer and clearer, but that's OK.

This is pretty funny, actually. I was wondering where you guys were. Trying to change the subject, with your fearless leader in trouble? Laffin', as you guys like to say.

Sooooo very predictable.

Jeff_O,

Not taking sides on this one. But just a heads up. Larry (BS/TryMe) is originally from Oregon.

Now, carry on.

Dat's cool. Got nothing to hide.

Just for you, Calvin, I could have killed a 6x6 bull easily my first season (Ukiah unit). 70 yards away, across a meadow. And any number of cows, including several I got within 20 feet of. And that was on the first day, of my first season, elk hunting. I've been within killing range of scores of elk since then. In an "any elk" or even "any bull" state, I'd have been on the scoreboard opening day of my first season.

But it doesn't work that way in Oregon these days. I was hunting a spike tag.

But this has SQUAT to do with whether 7mm-08 and .308 are essentially identical for practical hunting purposes. Stop trying to change the subject. It speaks to weakness on your part. If you believe the 7mm-08 to be superior to .308, speak up! If you believe otherwise, speak up!

Otherwise you are just here to try and deflect attention from the fact that your idol is getting his hat handed to him.

Too bad, so sad...

And you do?! It's not like you know anything about hunting elk in Oregon considering your success rate.

Why don't you look up Oregon elk hunting success rates there, bucko, before you continue to make a fool of yourself..?

While you are at it, look up success rates on blacktail bucks. I've killed one every year. Hint: statewide success rate on blacktails is well under 20%.
