The cartridge is right. FN Brownings were very good rifles. If the price is right and the condition is right, grab it, scope it, shoot it, hunt it.

They are great rifles. They just have a certain feel and fit that I really like. I have an '06 and it is very accurate and easy on the eyes as well. Careful about salt wood as Browning made a big mistake and cured some of their stocks with salt which then rusted the meatal it touched. IIRC, the salt stuff started in '67 but before you buy, take it apart and look it over and make sure the serial number on the bolt, barrel, and inside the stock all match and there is no rust. I would love to have a CRF 375 H and H.

I had one in 30-06. Great rifles, with a 62 manufacture date you're safe from the salt wood.I'm pretty sure it started in 66 though and not 67. Either way you're safe!

Classic rifle. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Jump on it, once you're sure its not salted.

I have the cheaper version, a like new Sears, JC higgins model 50. Its built on an FN commercial Mauser action with a High Standard Chrome lined barrel, and damn nice wood for a chain store gun. Its the only hunting rifle I have and the only one I need.
If your friend can get it for a reasonable price, he should jump on it and be happy. The Browning Safari is a great rifle. There is nothing made today that I would trade even up for in the same caliber.

The .30-06 is a more common chambering in the older Safari rifles. A .270 would command a premium.

question - did the bolt safari 30-06's only come in 22" barrel with sights? i've seen a few and they were all 22" and all had sights.

Picked up a 59 last year and as one poster said "...in 3006 just as the lord intended it to be..." Very accurate and "feels" right.
I'm no expert but I think the salt stocks did not start until the late 60's.
Buy it, and if you can part with it give it to your friend.
