For example, we could run a 208-gn Amax in our .308, and deliver 250 MORE pounds of energy at 600 yards than that 162 Amax that TryMe has a woody for.

It would drift- get this- a whole .1 (point one) MOA more in the wind than the 162. Oooh... that's a deal killer.

It would arrive going 56 fps slower. Damn, that's HUGE.

It would drop 6 inches more at 600, but that is the one variable that is easily controlled for.

You see how STUPID this whole thing is?!

THEY DO THE SAME DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't matter if one team looses by one goal or ten, they still lose. I think that may be the point. At least it is for me. Energy don't mean much, .1 more is still more, 56 fps is still slower, and 6 inches drop is still more. Stupid as it may be, second still isn't first. To be honest, I do not recall the original parmeters. I think, in so many, many, words, it was stated that it is better. Now you have proved it so for yourself.

Might as well put in my two cents.

Ran an -06 20 yrs killing bucks and a combined 14yrs killing bucks with my kid and the 7mm-08. I'm hear to tell ya that it's been my experience that the 7-08 is every bit as good as the -06 which some might say is better than a 308. Honestly I'd rather run the 7-08 cuz I feel it's better than an -06. JME

No, I'm making my points while TryMe isn't here typing a post every 15 seconds and flinging insults around in every direction.

Rman, the point is that there's a variety of parameters to this whole stoopid ballistic gack business.

TryMe has set up a rather ridiculous- IMO- scenario and used it demonstrate the superiority of his pet cartridge. His scenario- extreme long range, using a very specific bullet, with a caliber that very few people would choose for hunting at that range, anyway.

But, we could very easily simply juggle things around a little and change the outcome. What if a guy cares about bullet frontal area and weight and energy retention- which are all very reasonable things to worry about in long range hunting? Well, the .308 smokes the 7-08 then, even USING TryMe's harebrained scenario.

What if we ratchet back to "reasonable hunting ranges"? To return to bedrock, here's what the original poster said:

(snip)

Well heck, in THAT case my suggestion of a .358 sure looks good. As it does, if a guy cares about "thwack" and energy delivered (not saying I do, just saying a guy COULD).

But my point isn't that the .308 is better. My point is that they are essentially the same damn thing. Since it's so very easy to just juggle parameters a little and put one on top of the other, that right there proves my point.

See...?

The funny part is that this is a case of history repeating itself-no pun intended.

A lot more than a few years back when I was a kid, when my "giants" decided I was going to bust apart if they didn't include me in their week or two at hunting camp, this same stuff went on over the .270W and .30-06, or the .30-30 and .32WS. More than once things got hot and heavy among men who had been friends and relatives for the better part of their lives. Throw in some who were ruff around the edges to start, beer and allowing some of the wild to come back after a week in the woods and it could get interesting.

Me, I knew enough to keep my mouth shut, but then I had an old "chopped" 8mm 98 Mauser. What the hell did they know. whistle

Take a deep breath. You're going to hurt yourself. You just proved to yourself a few posts ago that they are not the same thing, remember? Deep breaths. You'll figure it all out.

29 pages of it, anyways...

Funny to watch his crew try and salvage the situation, though!

Are you back from breathing in your bag? Just to be clear, I'm not on "his" crew anymore than I'm on "yours". You were arguing with yourself about the perfomance of two rounds, and came up on the wrong side of how you wanted it to go. Are they close? Of course. Is one better (in the parameters of the discussion), yes.
