I was wondering if any of you might know the rate of twist in my Savage 99A Series A in 250 Savage? It has a 20 inch barrel, detachable magazine, pistol grip stock and checkering on the forearm and pistol grip.
Thanks Jim

At any rate the twist is 1 in 10. The older guns were 1 in 14. Reason I ask is that I have a 99-A but it is solid frame with rotory magazine. Thanks for the info on the 1 in 10 twist. I'm not sure if it is a saddle gun. Maybe you can help me here. I have had this rifle a long time but just recently started concentrating on shooting it more. It is as I described. In addition the barrel is marked:
SAVAGE Model 99A Series A CAL. 250 SAV. Westfield Mass. USA
There is a white spacer between the thin rubber recoil pad, the black grip cap, and the sling swivel studs. There is also a brass medalion with the Savage logo about the size of a dime in the middle of the grip cap. The serial number is D8704XX and I do not know the date of manf.
Any help you could shed on what it is would be appreciated.
Thanks Jim

Your rifle is not a cataloged model. It was made in 1981. It appears to be a Model-C or CD (clip vs rotor magazine)with a 99-A barrel made 1971-1975. Does the barrel have a front sight? Has the barrel been changed? Do you know any of the history of the rifle? It might be rebarreled or it might be factory.

I don't know much about it past about 18 years ago. I was with my uncle when he bought it then. He was into Ackley Improving some of his other guns and wanted to try it with a 250 Savage. So now it is a 250 Sav AI. I know it has the same barrel on it now as when he bought it so if it was switched it happened before he bought it. I inherited it and it is a sweet shooter. I know it seems like it should be a 99C as far as what is described in the Blue Book of Gun Values and I saw pictures on a 99C on an auction site that looked just like mine. Same Monte Carlo type stock but the BB of Gun Values does not list a 250 Sav. in 99C and mine says 99A . Now I'm really getting confused. I will try to take some decent pictures of it tomorrow and highlight the barrel markings and try to post them. Oh and yes it does have a front sight and a fold down rear sight. I would just like to know a bit more about it and appreciate you guys giving me an opinion. Thanks Jim
