Like I said bucktail, I'm not 100% sure.

I know if somebody baited me with a beaver...I'd at least come in and take a look, not sure if I'd eat it though. grin

that was so wrong, but it feels so right. grin

if your going to tee one up for me, I might as well take a swing at it.

If one were to use beaver for bait, I s'pect you would have a lot of activity at the bait site very quickly. If you used 2 beavers would that increase your odds any?

Luckily we cant bait deer here at all. Although it is growing in popularity to do it illegally. I dont understand it. People just need that instant gratification I guess.

I have never heard of anyone even trying to hunt bears in northern MN any other way, have any of you? It would be almost impossible I would think.

Unless you run them with dogs. Spot and stalk may work, but all the bears I've seen were in swampy cover, and were gone in seconds.

Did MN ever pass a reg that lets you run bears with dogs? It is quite popular here in WI.

Ive heard of people who have the time to scout and find out where the bear beds down using a small burner and some bacon grease in a can, up wind from the bedding spot to lure them out.

Maybe thats still baiting?

Swish,

The people that do that wouldn't happen to be from the Range would they?

The only time I've heard that was up there, and he has a beautiful cinamon phase coat to prove it works.

no dogs for bear huntin' in MN.

Mebbe in the BWCA you could hunt them from a canoe on the shorelines. that would be about the only way I could see with even a minimal chance at success.

I've also heard of people using predator calls to bring in bears.

I've only bear hunted once and I collected old baked goods from a donut shop, day old bread from subway, used fryer grease from resteraunts etc. Dig a pit, poor in the bait and cover with heavy logs and spray the surrounding foliage with liquid smoke. Then we dumped the grease around the bait site with the idea of the bear(s) getting it on their paws and leaving a trail through the woods for other bears to follow back to the bait. We also fermented oats in a 55 gallon drum and put in the bait pit but they picked around that and just ate the goodies. It sure was fun watching the drunk chipmunks though! grin

Never saw a drunken chipmunk, but have seen a drunken grouse.

In the fall there's a berry that the grouse like that ferments the longer it stays on the bush. Grouse love em. The one I saw was having a heck of a time staying on a branch. Wobbling all over the place. It finally tried to fly off and crashed into everything in it's path. Surprised it didn't braek it's neck.

Sure was a hoot to watch it.

When I was a kid we had a China Berry tree in our yard. The berries would remain on the tree long after they were ripe and therefore would ferment in the hot Alabama sun.The birds would eat these fermented berries and get drunk and fall all over the yard, run into the barn and house and some would fight. It was really amusing to watch.
