For years, the Remington 591 and 592 were dogs on the used gun market and could be bought in minty condition for under $200. Now that Centurion is making 5mm Rem Mag ammo, the prices gone up by at least 50%. Keep watching the auction sites and you'll come across 1 that meets your needs.

I currently have a NIB Remington 592 and a used 592, but I have not yet owned a 591.

I like the 5mm Rem Mag, but not as well as either the 17HM2 or 17HMR. The Centurian 30 grain factory loads don't shoot as good in my 592 as does the old 38 grain Remington/Peters factory load. Unless somebody starts to buy 5mm Rem Mags pretty soon, I'd suspect that the 5mm Rem Mag will become an orphan within 3 to 5 years.

are you interested in selling either of those guns jeff? been doing some research, not as effective as the 17 for sure. i like it because no one has one. i have an affinity for the obscure.

It's a neat little round. I wouldn't use one today just because the economics favor handloaded 223.

Back in 1978 this muley fell to a 5mm Rimfire Magnum in eastern MT. 36gr JSP bullet at about 2300 fps MV. Deer was hit broadside behind elbow from about 100 yards. He humped up, laid down, and was dead when we got up to him. Didn't intend to use that chambering for deer, but we were out shooting jackrabbits during deer season, and well, stuff happens.

As I recall the bullet entered between two ribs penetrated heart/lungs and stopped between two ribs on the offside.
