Who actually edits articles in American Hunter? There are 12 people listed as "editors" of various types in the masthead. This sentence appeared in an article by Frank Miniter: "We were going to a backcountry bear camp in a hinterland so remote grizzlies, wolves and moose were never wiped out by market hunters and so was a destination early-20th century hunters dreamed of." I think I understand what he's saying, but I think it could be tightened up a bit.
It's all in the reflexes.

In today's world, if you're a writer and you NEED an editor, I think you may find yourself unemployed... unless you bring something truely unique to the table. Me, I'm not all that unique, so my "hook" was that my photography is better than most, and my articles NEVER need editing; they're ready to run when I turn them in. With one exception all articles I've submitted were published as written, no editing.
**A complete re-write basically turning me into a whore, but keeping my name on it...I won't ever do business with that editor again.

I think Kevin nailed it.
John Anderson at Varmint Hunter does check articles and makes minor corrections, but he also calls to make sure his correction still meets the writer's intent, unless it is a very minor correction.
I'm sure, though, that if had to do much of a re-write, your services would be much less needed.

Yep, it's a little convoluted. Try this: "We were going to a backcountry bear camp in a hinterland so remote the grizzlies, wolves and moose were never wiped out by market hunters. It was a destination early-20th century hunters dreamed of."
It'd be better to not end the last sentence with the preposition "of" so try: It was a dream destination for early-20th century hunters.
