Just got back from a 2 week bear hunt in Tok. I had to shoot it twice but it was dead on the first shot, it just was being stubborn.

when I seen it on the hillside and after watching it and not seeing any cubs I asked my buddy what the range was. 206yards. I had a problem with the slide on my rem 7600 and when the slide locked forward the bear looked right at us. I quickly got in position and fired. bear didnt even flinch or show any sign of being hit. it walked up the hill, stopped and faced us and stood up for a better look. I shot again (210yards). once again no sign of being hit. I chambered a 3 rd and it ran off into the woods.

First thing in my mind was I screwed up. we waited a while and went looking for sign. nothing. I felt better cuz I was beginning to think that I didnt hit it and no wounded bear was running around. we looked around some more to make sure and there it was piled up against a tree about 30 yards away.
My rifle is sighted in for 200yards but after I shot the first time I knew I hurried it and I knew what I did wrong, 2nd shot felt fine.

the first shot was in the neck. it ripped the windpipe in half. 2nd shot was right through the chest, hit 1 lung and missed the spine by about an inch.

weird part about it all was that the stomach was completely empty but this bear had so much fat it was amazing. he ate good last fall, thats for sure.

I didnt measure it but it will go about 6'2" or so and its skull was a hair under 18" ( my wife through the calipers on it). My wife started fleshing it out but it was to frozen to lay it out flat to measure but she said it would go about 6'5".

I used my rem 7600 in 35whelen with 225gr partitions.

I'm not sure how to post pics but if someone is willing I'll send them to somebody and they can post them for me.

Way to go. How were you hunting? Spot and stalk in the mountains or cruising the shoreline or clear cuts or what? Were all the bears up your way rubbed like in SE AK? Rufous.

Thanks guys.
Big sky, pics are on the way. I appreciate it.

rufous, we had a bait station about 5 miles up from where I shot mine. for the first time in 14 years not a single bear hit it. we are all baffled. it was basically a sit and shoot. we were out chopping wood one day and this hill just stood out as good oppertunity. it proved to be true. we werent out nothing by sitting on it atleast.

The bear wasnt rubbed but its guard hairs were gone. 3 weeks ago they were still under alot of snow and ice so they havent been out of hybernation but for maybe a couple of weeks.
