That last post was worded corn-fusing-ly heh heh

We, the US, lost more folks in the Civil War than we did in WW2. Much less than one million. Our price paid pales compared to the Russians.

DixieFreedom,

The statistic vary widely, but I've often read that Russia lost upwards of 30-million total, including 12-million KIA.

On June 22, 1941 Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, with the greatest army ever assembled - over 3-million men in 148 divisions.

It woulda been bad with them in Normandy, me thinks...

Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense.

Three million men in uniform? Darn tootin! That really is amazing. Not a whole lot of them came back in one piece I suppose. The Russians may not have been the engineers that the Germans were, but they certainly weren't a bunch of sissies by any estimation. Three million, intelligent well fed square heads coming to shoot mausers at you... not a nice prospect. That really was a tussle. Good thing Hitler was a maniac...

You know, we might not have whipped em if it had not been for Russia.

Most Europeans feel that the Russians did, in fact, win WW II. Of course, our material support to the Russians and the extra fronts the Allies created in Africa, Italy, France, etc. were major factors. However, the Russian sacrifices were mind boggling. Then, too, for the Russians, it was charge or be shot in the back by a representative of the Communist party. Much of Russia at times welcomed the Nazis. Then they would be murdered when the Ruskies regained the territory and back and forth. Horrible times. Mass suffering on a scale we cannot possibly comprehend. Millions dying from starvation, the weather, fighting, executions, etc.

IMHO, the Eastern Front was a clash of two evils; and two tyrants. I wonder if they were trying to "outkill" each other. Let's not forget that Stalin and Hitler made a deal to "divy-up" Poland. Hitler just made his move first, war between the two was just a matter of time. They were both murderers of the highest form. Really too bad they didn't wear each other down and save the west the cost of the cold war and the suffering that resulted from Commie domination of eastern Europe. The civilians on both sides suffered horrendously.

When it is all said and done, we came out on top only by the grace of God.

Just think, if the Nazis had delayed their attack on Russia they could have held us off long enough to perfect their nuclear device. It would have been ugly.

"When it is all said and done, we came out on top only by the grace of God." That could be closer to the truth than you realize.

When you think about the reason why Germany didn't develop the atom bomb first, you have to consider the men who did develop it. Albert Einstein, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, Rudolf Peierls, and Otto Frisch were all scientists who worked on developing the atom bomb. The common link is that they were all European Jews fleeing from the Nazi threat. Enrico Fermi headed the team developing the bomb, and while he was not Jewish, he fled Italy with his Jewish wife. So roughly half of the team of scientists who invented the atom bomb were Jews fleeing from the Nazi's.

Kind of a divine irony that Hitlers hatred of the Jews probably prevented him from developing the bomb and ultimately lost the war for him.
