Nasty beer? - My brother used to invite me over to his place when he was in coll. all he had was Milwaukees Best Light (unleash the beast)
That was worse than anything I have ever consumed in my life - including my anti-freeze accident.

Maybe we should have divided the recommendations into at least three categories: Mass Produced (and maybe Mass Produced "Specialty") Imported Micro-Brews
Some of my preferences from living on both sides of the border: Mass Produced (U.S.) - Bud, MGD Mass Produced "Specialty" (U.S.) - Henry Weingard's Mass Produced (Canada) - Labbat's Blue, Kokanee Mass Produced "Specialty" (Canada) - John Labatt's Classic Imported - Beck's Micro-Brewery - no preference, there are too many for me to decide

Hello everyone,
Maredsous, Chimay, Moose Drool, Caol Ila? Serious tastes indeed.
I like to keep Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Pilsner Urquell in the 'fridge, for myself or guests.
While I agree that mass produced American lager is amazingly consistent and of high quality (technical sense only), so is Wonder Bread white and I don't make any sandwiches with that. The lagers I lust for include the dunkel doppelbock served at Kloster Andechs in the Bavarian countryside, Pilsissimus and St. Jakobus at the Forschungs brewpub in Perlach (Munich suburb), and the soft smooth rich tasting beer in the shade of the chestnut trees at the Augustiner beer garden in Salzburg, Austria.
As to ales, there are many that I like but I particularly enjoy cask conditioned bitter as served in the Hung Drawn and Quartered (a Fullers pub near the Tower of London) or The Lamb (a Young's pub in Bloomsbury). Oh yeah, I can't forget the Timothy Taylor's Landlord bitter (a great beer from Yorkshire) that I savored in the Bow Bar in Edinburgh.
In malt whisky, a Highland Park 18yr. is probably my overall favorite. If I'm after straightforward isla, the basic Laphroaig 10yr. mostly gets the nod. (I hoard my Caol Ila, Bruichladdich, and Port Ellen.) And when I want something massive I've got a Distiller's Edition Lagavulin matured in Pedro Ximenez sherry wood.
Let's see, how can I stir the pot? Drinking beer that needs to be ice cold to be enjoyed and putting ice into single malt whisky are heinous crimes akin to cooking a fine steak past medium rare. Yep, that ought to do it!
Slainte! Dave

I have killed my own food. I can shoot a weapon. I know how to use a chainsaw. I can change my own tire thank you. Teal, cool quote, but I thought that was the description of a Redneck Woman... After many drunk episodes in my youth I hardly drink at all nowadays and have lost the ability. In fact I get incoherent after only about two beers anymore, which works out cheaper for everyone. But, down here in Texas, ya can't go wrong with Shiner Bok, especially if you're just having one or two and actually pausing long enough to taste the stuff. Birdwatcher

While that may be a redneck woman - there are too many "men" who can't say the same.

Beer- Shiner Bock or Icehouse Tequila- El Jimador, don't look for it north of the Rio Grande, a FRIEND brings me 2 liters a month. True sippin' quality mezcal. Rum- for mixing, Cruzan Dark or Bacardi Special dark. The best staight up drinking rum, Santa Teresa, from Venezuela. Whiskey, There's actually a distillery in Missouri that ages in used sourmash barrels. I can't remember the name right now, but It's easy to find in the St. Louis area. It has an old style taste and finish, like my Grandpa's homemade.

Brad, Picked up a sixer of MooseDrool last weekend. You're right! it is an exellent beer! Reminds me of BlackButte porter ale, but is smoother. BlackButte was a favorite of mine 'till I got some that was "skunkie" Have been drinking a BlackButte IPA (QuailSprings)that's pretty good... Painless, Pete's Wicked ale is pretty good stuff, get the sampler pack and try 'em all. Here's a pretty good beer site, http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/I do love me a beer, got one now as a matter of fact!

FWIW:
CAS is dead on. As I stated in a different thread, Deschutes Brewery makes great stuff. It Is fresh and local in these parts. Black Butte Porter is my "usual" but I pick up the stouts and ales from time to time. All of it if good stuff.

don't you know "Big Eddie Springs" is a horse.
I've tried the German imports but they don't taste as good as the beer did when I was in Germany.
Moose Drool Fat Tire Alaskan Amber
MGD or Icehouse for the cheap stuff.

Does the Miller Brewing Co. still make "Red, White & Blue" beer? I remember it from my younger days, ... wicked, wicked hangovers from that crap, but it cost less than $4 a case, IIRC. We had a slogan for it, too. :
