bucktales and Altjaeger,

Weidmannsdank. I have not been online these days as we have been busy. In one area we had to thin out the yearling class considerably. Hardly got through winter. Carcass weights are way low. We were able to get 14 yearlings. Clients harvested four adult bucks. We had a good start.

Pics promised.

Ignorant and curious here...Why is Roe Deer season held in the spring? Here in the states we have been conditioned from birth to think deer season is in the fall. I am sure you have some sound management reasons for this timing. I'm sure I'll learn something here...
Excellent pics BTW, especially that big, old one!

We have different deer seasons.

For example, here in South Belgium:

We may stalk (or high seat) roe bucks from 1st to 15th may
We may stalk (or high seat) them again from 1st aug. to 30th nov.
We may hunt all the roe deer from 1st oct to 30 nov. no matter doe/ buck stalk/high seat/driven hunt.

IMO, that setting offers differents advantages:

1st benefit: we have at least one season for trophy hunting / stalking (trophy buck are hard to find during driven hunt season and driven hunt doesn't allow easy selection).

2d benefit: we have a selection season before the breeding season, allowing to take out of the reproduction process the weaker/uglier roe bucks.

3d benefit, for some of us: roe deer is still an appreciated meat served during christian "communion" banquets. I Have to say that such a tradition also traditionnaly causes many poaching issues mad

ingwe,
the reason is because the life cycle of the roe deer has nothing to do with that of other deer.
the bucks shed their horns in tha fall and are clean of velvet by end of march.
in Spain we start hunting them somewhere around April, depending on the region.
I'll try to post a couple of pictures from this season later.

Don't know about NA deers but it is true its life cycle is a bit particular: births occur during spring just like other species but breeding occurs in the end of july - beginning of augustus: the specie knows a pause in foetal development during fall / winter (does are pregnant during 9,5 monthes !!!).

Polka, my "rouge de Baviere"
were it not for her I don`t think we would have retreived this other buck, from opening day also.
hit square in the ribs at 240 meters with a 120gr T-TSX that did not open much, it run for about 250-300 meters into the cover provided by those young oaks without being able to find a single droplet of blood, just a few hairs in the anschuss...
it was not only a very ineresting head also, but very large as well.
I hope you enjoy the photos.
Regards from Spain.

Extremely nice bock. A 8 point is rare. Am I seeing correctly that it is a 3x5? I never saw more than a 6 point from the hochsitz. Congratulations!

I am curious as to where you hunt that produces those kinds of antlers?

Altjaeger,
I hunt in the north-central part of Spain, in Castille but only exceptionally we get a buck like this. It was even more exceptional to get two in the same year but in any case we cannot say that this area or any other that I knw of produces them regularly. Here are a couple of pictures of what we get on average.
