I'm sure by now you guys know how I feel...

The truth is, it kills schitt better than it should. I'm sure I could spend some time with a ballistics calculator.. But other than the 162 AMAX the 7-08 doesn't have a whole lot of bullets over .475 for a BC, that are BIG GAME pills.

I don't give two schitts what the group decides on this one, I'll stick to my short actions that are 80% 270 with the 130-140's, and damn near a 25-06 with the 90-100's. I'll just keep my head down somewhere in Montana and kill stuff with my 260's

That is plain bullschitt.

7mm Nosler 150gr E-Tip BC .498
7mm Nosler 150gr BT BC .493
7mm Nosler 160gr Partition BC .475
7mm Nosler 160gr Accubond BC .531
7mm Nosler 175gr Partition BC .519

And thats just Nosler for starters. Even the Hornady 139gr Interbond has a BC of .486

Most of the naysayers of the 7-08 have little or no experience with it.

When I said HUNTING bullet I meant a Partition.

A 140 6.5 Partition is .490 for a BC. I don't imagine too many guys shoot 175 Partitions at 2500, but I imagine there's a few.

If you reload, there is no practical difference in field performance between the 260 and 7mm-08 for most applications. If you think that you need to shoot a bullet that is heavier/tougher than the 140 grain Partition, then you would need to go with the 7mm-08, but with either cartridge you're likely to get into COAL issues with the heavier/longer bullets in the SA rifles that both are sold in.

As a dual purpose varmint/medium game cartridge, I think that the 260 has an advantage over the 7mm-08, because you can shoot the 95 grain VMax. With the 260, you could shoot 2 different bullets and cover the whole spectrum of pdogs through elk pretty well via the 95 grain VMax and 130 grain AB. Of course, few of us who own rifles chambered for dual purpose varmint/medium game cartridges use them in that manner, as we have dedicated varmint rifles to fill 1/2 of that niche. However, IIRC, Mule Deer claims to have shot a pdog out around 800+/- yards with a 260, using an 85 grain Sierra HP, before he dumped that crappy Remington 700 on some poor unsuspecting soul.

I own a couple of rifles in both calibers, but tend to like my 260's a bit better. Just about the perfect whitetail caliber I think- low recoil, great accuracy, good BC and SD numbers....

I just built a Savage in 7/08.. and I am really liking the cartridge.... However I have owned several 7 x 57s for a while and also several 260s for a while... the 7/08 won't be replacing any one of these rifles...

however it is a well balanced cartridge and I am glad I picked this caliber for the Savage action I had bought...

I didn't need a 7/08 but I am glad I have one now.... I love the 260 and have since it came out... the 7/08 won't make me get rid of the 7 x 57s and the 260 didn't make me get rid of the 6.5 x 55s I own...

My preference of 7/08 vs 260 for game hunting, leans toward the 260...

but I have been load developing for a friends Savage in 308, and I definitely prefer the 7/08 over the 308....

Each cartridge has its merits.. but a real rifle nut, has to own both in my book, plus the 6.5 and 7 MM Mauser cartridges also....

but I am also found of the 243, 6mm Rem and the 257 Roberts...

I wish I had enough hunting opportunities to use each caliber every season, to bring home game with...

See thats just funny... I like 260's and 308's on short actions. I have no use for 243s or 7-08s.

260's are pretty easy to get along with. Low recoil, flat shooting, and flexible as hell.

How do the 140's in 6.5/264 intrude on the powder space in a Rem 7 or Montana?

Or does everybody stick to 120/130's?

I'm about half way into a really cool .260 project.
.260 Retro style

Being the fortunate owner of 3 tac-driving 7X57's the 7-08 doesn't do much for me. I do see the appeal though. This is really one of those pointless debates like the never ending 270Win vs 280Rem argument. Of coarse everybody knows the 270 is better, but.... whistle

Have fun with it.

Once again, I was calling you on your posted comment listed above. Then you changed directions.

The 7mms do not suffer from bullet selection, high BCs or not.

You were posting out your arse, you were proven wrong. Live with that fact.

No Larry groupie here, just a big 7mm fan. And for the record, I recommended and built a 260Rem for a pard awhile back. The 260 is a great choice, and IMO is a better dual purpose coyote/big game cartridge than the 7-08. But for a big game only rig, I'll take the 7-08.

I'm really liking the 260. My nephews 260 is doing a great job and is very, very accurate.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a .260 in almost any scenario I'd use a 7mm-08, but for someone to try and spin that the .260 has a better bullet selection than the 7mm-08, that's just funny right there.

Starting?? Hell, that and a 30-06 is all you need to hunt the lower 48 and AK.

Seriously though, load him up some 95 VMAXs at about 3000 FPS, recoil is non-existant (my 8 and 10 YO daughters shoot it very well) and it splats critters well. It gets blasty in short tubes though.

I`m a bit late in this squabble so I`ll keep it short. I used to have 3, 708 and carried a M7 so chambered for Mi whitetail stuffed with 140 gr BTs and never was let down.
I`m now down to 1, 708 but have 2, 260s. My deer woods rifle has been a Kimber in 260 for some time now and a M700 for a couple years prior to the M84. I feed them 129 gr Hornadies and to be honest see no difference in my results between the 708 & 260 on game. Neither has left a bullet in game for me to study its effect, nor has one outshot the other (cartridge) as far as I can tell.
Both will kill a woodchuck farther then I can hit them and are great rounds for the beginning shooter. If I chase Elk sized game I`ll drag out my `06 and to be honest feel I`m better off with a 223/22-250 for varmites. Everything has a place.
IMO the arguement over these two is like fighting over the 270 Win vs 280 Rem, for most purposes moot......except we all know in the back of our little minds the 260 rules whistle

I ordered a .260 when they first came out in the Model 7. Individual rifle inaccuracy aside, the round is as perfect as I can find in a light kicking round for TX deer hunting.
If I had plans for larger game, I might prefer the 7 mm, but for pigs, coyotes, or deer, the .260 is a game hog. I have some 130 grain federal fusions I am anxious to test on some larger hogs this summer.
