As of late, Cartridge Cage fights have been envogue. .308 vs. 7mm-08 has become a Hydra, chop of a head of seven and it immidiatly grows back. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth...owflat/Number/2904382/page/1#Post2904382I thought, the zentith of sensefree evaluation and comparison has been reached with .338 Fedral vs. 8x57IS. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth...owflat/Number/3025171/page/1#Post3025171Now, just new, 7mm-08 vs. .275 Rigby ... Come on, all of you. We can top this. 7x57 Mauser vs. 275 Rigby Or here: Birds of a feather, but I am sure we can split a hair. Just shoot and hunt with the damn things - Rant over.

I've got an old ZG-47 in 8X64 Brenneke so the 7X64 Brenneke would be an easy choice for me. Besides, for practicality I already have a .270

The 40 degree angle of the Brenneke shoulder makes it a clear winner.........
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

The 40 degree angle of the Brenneke shoulder makes it a clear winner......... Yeah but that wider and longer case of the .280 might add a grain or two of capacity.

you can shoot 7x64's in a 280 but not 280's in a 7x64. that means the 280 is also a 7x64 but the 7x64 is only itself.

200 psi additional allowed pressure gives the 7X64 a neat and definitive advantage !!! From an European perspective I believe the difference essentially comes from the variety of available rifles in each caliber and the variety of available factory loads. We can have our best finest rifles in 7X64, we can have autoloaders and an incredible variety of loads. With the .280 we can't. I've already seen some .280's on the field ... All were Remington SA shooting Remington ammo.

No doubt that the .280 Remington makes more sense, especially in the USA. The Model 700 Mountain Rifle, the Kevlar stocked one from the Custom Shop, and the 700 CDL are really nice rifles at a reasonable price (well, the Kevlar was reasonable as a used rifle).

If I was going out and buy one then I would definately opt for the .280.
The 7x64 has absolutly no advantage over a .280. 200 PSI is zilch anyway you cut it...I have seen that much difference from shot to shot in many calibers and it guns shooting the same ammo...YOu can get more than that by using a filler in the big bores. The 280 has more powder capacity anyway.
They are both quite nice cartridges and basically totally equal in every respect..If I lived in Europe I'd probably opt for the 7x64, but not in the USA...

I have both and the loads for each are identical -- one likes 140-grainers, the other 160-grainers. Both do well with my 150-grain load. No dog in this "fight", just actual experience.

All that said above is right, but remember one thing: the 7x64 Brenneke was developped in 1917 from the 8x64 case and even in that very bad period of WW1, it was created for hunting sport only and not for military purposes...Strange isn't it?
The 280Rem came years later. But even if in Europe the 7x64 sales are more important now than the 280, in France the Remington caliber was and is a best seller with the 740,742,7400 and 750 because they were semi-auto available long before 7x64 semi were, and used for driven hunt. Balistically even for hair splitters they are equal. Factory loadings of 7x64 offer better choice of bullets, reloading can improve the 280...Hair splitting for gun loonies.

7x64 handles odd weight bullets like 139 and 154's better... it blows away the 280 when charges are weighed on digital scales.

Think I can get my .280 punched out?
