Just got to play with it for the first time today. Given it's reputation for gather internal dust, I slapped a B&W MRC (or whatever it's called) UV filter on it. Quite a bit bigger than the Tamron 17-50...

I like it so far, but obviously need some time to get it worked out...

100% crop of that picture...

A bit fuzzy on the dogs ear, but she wasn't exactly sitting still.

As the reviews have noted... it's not a "L" quality build, but it's smooth enough and very quiet. The Tamron would wake the dead.

I've yet to suffer the fate of glass that was "too good",though of course I'm patiently waiting.

Picked up a Tammie 18-270...So far I have been pleased. Pretty sharp, focuses well unless real dark out. When I want to travel without a lot of extra lenses it combined with a Canon 100-400 makes a good combo...

I shoot the 100-400L too,but it's pretty slow. Depending on the DSLR,you may get some back by bumping ISO,but fast glass is fast glass.

My default lens, whether XTi,40D or 1Ds is the 28-75 F/2.8 Tammy. Much prefer it to my 17-40L or 70-200 F/2.8L.

She's amazing.

TryMe do you have some pics from the Tammy that you could post, I would be interested in seeing what they are like. I use the 17-40L on my 40D and 5DMkII and love it...very sharp lens...but it does lack the speed of the 2.8. I sold off my 70-200 F2.8 IS and kept my 70-200 F4 IS because it was sharper.

Yes, the 28-75 Tammy rocks....How do you like the 1D? Trying to decide between the 1D and 5D...Have a 30D and a 40D but looking for mo' better...

I'd go 5D MKII and bank the ISO latitude,in conjunction with the video capabilities.

Bang for the buck, the 40D is a monster and very difficult to slight.

I dig the 1Ds's "toughness" and weather sealing, though it's a bitch to navigate the controls one-handed(like when fighting fish). The Tammy do nice things on the full frame sensor and I tend to keep the 17-40 on the crop bodies.

Like everything...it's give and take.

The 17-55 is one of my favorite lenses. Bigger and heavier than the Tammy but the addition of IS and the performance at f2.8 makes it a perfect walk around lens for me.
This combined with the 70-200 f4IS makes a great travel combo.
Add the 100-400 and your in great shape.
I hope you enjoy the 17-55 f2.8 IS as much as I do.
This is one lens that I do always keep a filter on and like some one else mentioned up-thread I only use quality filters.
B+W or Heliopan.

The 17-55 is great but I choose the 16-35 with my 1dsMkII for sharpness and straight lines. I also always use quality filters to protect from scratches from cleaning and bumps. It's a bear to use while canoeing and fishing.
