A while back I bought a scoped savage 110 in 300 win mag and sold the scope for more than I paid for the whole package leaving me with a free gun. The gun is a bull barrel accutrigger model, BUT - the original owner had shortened the barrel for some reason to 16 inches. The muzzle blast/flash is impressive. Now, this would be a great in the brush carbine if it had a sporter weight barrel. It is VERY accurate, but just isn't much fun to shoot at the bench.

I know these are easy to rebarrel. What would you guys create? I'm kinda new to rebarreling so I don't know what range of calibers I could use. I currently have a 10fp 308, a 10fp 223, and a Mark V in 270 wby for elk.

Any lighter kicking long action calibers you'd suggest for a custom barrel target gun?

Can I make this into a 270 wby?

Thanks in advance.

Sure you can! you already have the proper bolt face....

I can give you some load data that will still make that short barrel usable, by lowering velocity to the equivalent of a 30/30 or so...

or if you don't want it, I'll adopt it, I can give it a new loving home...

I'd ditch it to someone else and start fresh.

What steps and approx cost would be needed to turn it into a 270wby target gun? I'm going to start reloading for my Mark V and it makes sense to keep total calibers to a minimum. Do I simply swap a barrel and headspace it? How much does a good, not great ($$$), barrel cost?

Right now it just sits in the safe. Its VERY accurate and its a shame to mess with it, but I just don't enjoy shooting it the way it is. Does anyone shoot a short barrel large caliber target gun? I mean, do I just have to warm up to it?

Sinking coin into a Savage is like a tricked out 289 in a Pinto. No matter how bitchin the small block it's still a PINTO.

You could spin a 257 Wby barrel on it as well.

but I already am going to reload for 270 wby.

How much is a decent barrel and how much would someone charge me to put it on and headspace it? (if I don't do it myself)

Thanks.

A barrel will cost about $250 and up for a pre-fit barrel,$50 for tools to swap barrel,$10 to rent headspace gauge, $12 for membership to above website. Douglas (FROM SSS Supply), Mcgowan, Pac-Nor, Shilen are just a few that make pre-fit barrels for your gun.

Beware of the money pit, it will nickel and dime you into debt with the "stone soup" mode of "just 1 more thing" will make it perfect, but 1 more becomes 2 more becomes 3 more becomes, etc., etc., etc.

Unless you like the stock on this rifle, all you really have is a used Savage action. If you change barrels to a sporter contour, you're going to need a stock. Do you really want to put $$ into a barrel and a stock?

That said, I bought a varmint contour Shilen barrel in 260 from MidwayUSA awhile back and installed it on a Savage 11 that had been a 204, so I had to buy a bolt head and a magazine box and I had to open the barrel channel. It shoots, but if I decide to sell it, nobody is going to give me the $600+/- that I have into it.

Exactly right!Check the Shilen site for Savage replacement barrels with factory contour, also Sharp Shooter Supply and Midway
You can barrel it for any cartridge with Standard length and Mag.bolt face,264 win,7mm rem,300win,338win,and several others or the Weatherby you already have.

I rebarreled a new Lam Sav 111 .30-06 to an A&B .338-06. New barrel was $125. Sold the old barrel for $75. Good luck.

Throw that gun my way. I'll never own a Remington after shooting Savages. You can get them for a fraction of the price and they shoot just as good if even better. They might not be a beautiful piece but Looks Don't Kill. The action you have is a hot item they are hard to find for people building custom guns really like this action. There are people buying the stevens guns just to get the actions. Go to http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/ or http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/ . You'll get some real answers there. If you want to sell the action send me a pm. I have a Savage Chambered in 300 Winchester magnum Factory varmint barrel contour and have shot a 6 3/8" group a 820 yards. This is well under moa "minute of angle". For the money difference the Remington will not do any better. grin

My ER Shaw barrel for my Savage was $150.00....wait was a ridiculous 4 months, but in the end, once it got here, it went together easily...

had to sand down the barrel a little with steel wool... as it was a little rough....

that took 5 minutes so no complaints...

I would install a SAVAGE .338 Win Mag barrel on it, since you have the correct boltface, and be done with it.
Or, possibly, the correct length .300 WM barrel.

Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Corp has SAVAGE NOS barrels for $98, and aftermarket for $165, in literally dozens of chamberings - of which only the mags should be of interest to you, unless you also want to change the bolt/etc.

Yes, I have 3 left hand Savages. They are a first model 110L from about 1960 that was rebarreled to .25-06, a 110 CL with the old style detachable mag in 30-06, and an Accutrigger 11FL in 7-08. They are all shooters. The only problem I have had was finding someone to do a trigger job on the early model. The trigger on it was really odd and impossible for me to adjust to a decent pull.

I refuse to buy right hand guns any longer. I have leftys and single shots like my Contenders. Not to mention a few autoloader .22s that work fine for a lefty.
