What don't like about my set up? I wanted to get LOW power, tons of light, ample eye relief and let me mess with turrets/focus (to find the cartridges full potential).

..........Now c`mon stick! I didn`t say I didn`t like it!

Try not to take this out of context as you have with everything else on the other thread.

16x on the high end for a 375? Were you planning on shooting and taking out a fly`s balls as he landed on your quarry, or are you planning on just properly placing a shot into the vitals of your quarry?

Sure! You can certainly use a 2.5x16 on a 375 or for that matter, a minature version of the Hubble space telescope if you wish, or anything else you want for that matter.

For a 375, a 16x on the high end for any game or for any hunting distance used for any 375, in my OPINION, is waaaay too much! With my 1.5-5x20 VX3 on my 375 Ruger, I take out 1 gallon milk cartons filled with water very easily at 300 yards and certainly any deer sized game or larger out to 400-500 yards set on the 5x.

You`re the first I`ve read about, with a max of 16x mounted on a 375.

5x,6x to 8x max is all most if not all will need.

Mini Hubble, thats rich!
I haven't committed to any particular scope for it yet, just love the one I have already. Admittedly fly balls would be hard to put the tag on.

......Since you haven`t committed to a scope yet for your 375 Super Sako, I`ll throw ya a little piece of good advice.

Even though the 2.5x16 has wide magnification versatility from the low to the high, don`t buy an Elite 6500 for a 375. Are doing some varmit hunting?

The Kodiak with its 21.5" barrel is a rather quick handling rifle. A DGR is suppose to be as quick as possible. That scope is about what? 18 ounces or so? Porportionally, it MAY also look a little too large for that rifle and it will add more overall weight than need be to your rifle. The 6500 is not a DGR scope!

Consider these instead;

1.5-5x20 VX3 (1st pick)
1.75-6x32 VX3 (2nd pick)
1.25-5x20 Big Sky Sightron
2.5-8x32 VX3
2.5-8x32 Nikon Monarch

Something along those lines! Burris also has their lower variable Safari models which are also very good picks.

Good luck!

I'll check these out. I was thinking maybe IOR 2-12x32? Though I don't even want its mildot, I use a range finder past 250 or so.

The IOR is as heavy as an elite 6500 with 50 mm objective (21oz)

Yah, he's right. I suffer from an addiction to big scopes (I have 4-12 on my 22). The first step is admitting I have a problem. Thanks for the intervention squeeze!

nickel: I understand addictions....I have them for small scopes grin

To me,on a hunting rifle, a 2.5-8 is BIG. Animals that are 375H&H fodder tend to run on the large side.Hey,for the range anything goes, have a ball. But a big scope like that on,say,a brown bear hunt can have unintended consequences.

[/quote......You`re welcome!...A 4x12 on a 22 rimfire uh? Maybe NASA can build you your next scope???????LOL laugh laugh laugh....Call it the "mini Hubble"???.. laugh laugh laugh

Don`t fret! You`re not alone in your "addiction." Overscoping and/or mis-matching a scope to a rifle and cartridge is very common. Everytime I go to the range, it seems as though there are always 30-30s or 45-70 Marlin levers with either a 3x9, a 4x12 or a 2.5x10 on them. I once even saw a 4.5x14 on a 45-70 lever!! Yep! Maybe they have eye problems?

The proper hunting scope choice for any rifle, should be based on how the rifle is used in the field, average hunting distances, matched properly to the cartridge`s max EFFECTIVE hunting range, game hunted, matched for the terrains (brush and open areas or both) and should be properly matched for the rifle`s size, weight and porportions, so that it looks good aesthetically on a particular rifle as well. I`ve seen 50mm obj. scopes on levers too! IMO, YUK!

Many also feel they need a high magnifications to get good groupings at 100-200 yards! This is FALSE! I can group shots equally as well on 1.5x, as I can with the same scope set on 5x. Or on 3x with the same scope set on 9x,,etc.

There was or is now an online article, where the author compared his groupings using the same rifle with a 1.5x scope vs a 35x scope. There was hardly a difference at 100 yards.

The best scope formula for any dangerous game rifle imo, should be lighter weight, be very fast for the shooter to acquire a target moving or stationary, have wider FOVs on the low power and have FAST (no squinting) both eyes open acquiring and aiming capability on the low power for fast freehand (from the shoulder) firings if needed for any fast follow-up shots. A scope does, can and will make a difference in a rifle`s handling speed which is based on the shooter`s reaction time (signal to the brain from the eye) with what he first sees through the scope until the shot is fired. When using a DGR, one is as only as quick as the scope will allow you to be. Depending on the variable, different scopes have slower reaction times and faster reaction times.

The scope should also have enough magnification for the precision shots at the longer distances, with enough magnification for the cartridge`s capability, should one use a DGR for elk, moose etc in more open areas.

Some buy the lite, ultra-lite and more compact rifles and then mount 15-18 oz`d or heavier scopes on them and over scope in the process. Why buy a lite weight rifle, to then only put a heavier and slower reacting hunting scope on it? That ruins the whole concept of the lite weight and better handling rifle in the first place!! Like a high variable on a handy 30-30 or 45-70???

No doubt, some buy their scopes based on the advice given by (SOME dummies) working behind the gun store counters!!

Good luck friend! Pick a good one for that 375!

Nicely done! [/quote........Thanks!......On another thread, there was a subject concerning rifle "pet peeeeves."

That`s my biggest damn pet peeve! Not so much in criticizing the individual rifle makers for this or that. Instead, my biggest peeve with rifles, are shooters either through ignornace, bad advice, lack of experience, or stupidity from those who know better, who put the wrong damn scopes on their rifles!!! mad

The overscoping addiction kinda reminds of the yuppies who buy a 4 wheel drive vehicle,,,that never engage the 4 wheel drive.

..........I read a review on a lower variable powered scope awhile back, where the reviewer made a comment, that his buddy put a new 4.5-14x50 scope on his new 10 lb + Sendero rifle for an upcoming elk hunt.

As it turned out, the terrain was very steep (perfect terrain to carry a 10 lb + rifle :D,,,LMAO) and the kill was made at a distance of 19 paces.... laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh............LMAO again!!!!!!

.........He DEFINETLY needed MO power!!!.... laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

It just goes to show, that some buy their rifles and scopes based on their emotions, rather than thinking a few things through first and doing some research ahead of time.
