squeeze: Back just after the last glacier retreated,my brother wanted to go elk hunting; he had no rifle. I grabbed a 30/06 FW with a 4X Leupold(with the tiny 28mm objective;oh,and it only had one crosshair) zeroed it with a 165 Partition and 58-IMR4350,and hustled West.

Five days later he(a rank amateur) lowered the boom on a big 5 point at about 275-300 yards; one shot....

I swear this stuff is made much more complex today than it really is, or has to be..... smile

You and your bro are as old as the the last glacier retreat?? LOL!!

Yep! It is more complex than needs be. But all the scope makers, to avoid stagnation and increase sales, are always offering new (what they think are) goodies and new gimmicks. Just like rifle makers. And they should. My beef is, they come out with stuff that sometimes is overkill.

I suppose if one were using a 257 Wby or a say a fast 6.5 or 7mm, a 2.5x16 or 30x Elite 6500 would be good,,,IF,,,smaller varmits are being killed at the much longer ranges from a very stable platform as included as part of a rifle`s use. But as an all-around big game scope strictly for deer sized animals which is larger and heavier to carry around with no varmit use??....Nope! Not the 6500s.

Imo, as well as coming out with the 2.5x16 and the 2.5x30 6500s, and be the first to do so which is all well and good, Bushnell should have also increased their selection in the 4200 line, along with increasing the eye relief a little as well.

I see no 1" tubed 2x7s, no 2x8s or 2.5x8s in the 4200s. There is nothing in-between their 1.25-4.5x24 straight tubed 4200 (30mm tubed only) and their 3-9x40. They may be losing a big market in those mags to Leupold and others that do offer more selections and with better optics than the 2x7 3200.

I've lived in wyoming most of my life, I've done some crap with rifles, that you would call me a liar for (I promise). Sometimes frickin power is needed. I admit I need to think different with my 375, but I don't swallow the whole 8 power max line....
mock a 12 power 22 caliber scope if you want, but rest assured the amount of range, dial, shoot I do with it my 22, makes all my long range shooting second nature.
Aim small, miss small.

2.5-16 elite 6500 is a dang good scope, good weight, good for everything, from prairie dogs, paper, moose, deer it is not to much! (on the 375 it is too much, I already agreed)
shoot, shoot, shoot.........then it makes sense.
If I sit around buying glass and not stretching my skills and the abilities of the cartridges I shoot then it is to much...I do and I would spit at any thing less for my long range rigs (my 22 needs big magnification to train appropriately).

...........You are associating or interpreting some joking around,,,,as mocking!!! But you can go ahead and think as you wish!

Out to 500 yards on deer SIZED animals and larger, NOT VARMITS (no more than 500 yards max for my kill shots), most hunters if not all can accomplish with a max 8x or 9x scope, as those who have a 10x a 12x or even a 14x max scope.

Why? Very simple! One large reason is, the more you increase your magnification on a target, the more the scope wobble there will be. We all have it and cannot avoid it. Increased scope wobble due to increased magnification, delays the shot by creating more un-certainty.

It`s very natural to delay a shot until the wobble decreases to the eye. In most cases for hunting shots out to 500 yards on deer sized and larger game, seldom is the max power used on most scopes. In fact, many hunters will not exceed 5x or 6x for their longest shots.

But you don`t have to take my word for it. Here is an expert! On "shootingtimes.com" within the video section under the "optics" section, you`ll find a video called "Fixed Power Scopes vs Variable Power Scopes" (something like that), with Wayne Van Zwoll. Aside from him talking about fixed vs variable, listen closely to what he says about too much magnification and scope wobble.

If you cannot relate to him or disagree with what he says, then fine! Turn your scopes up to full power if that suits ya!

I myself do Not care for 20mm lenses! I have Leupold Vari X-2's on two of my big bores. A .416 Rem. mag and a .458 Win mag both are model 70 Winchesters.

The Leupols scope has large thick recticules that do not get lost in dim light or tangles in brush etc. The power is 2 x 7 (which I have never needed) the lense diameter is 32mm. I have never had to go over 4 power at anytime during a hunt to secure the shot downrange on any animal deer size or larger.

The Leupold Quick Attach mounts & rings work well and never had any problem with them since installation was done over 6 years ago. I myself just don't like the looks of Talley rings.

.............If you include varmit hunting AND long range paper punching, the 2.5x16x 6500 is a good all around scope. But as an all around scope for deer and larger game (no varmits and paper) out to 500 yards, I can do the same things with a 8x or 9x max scope, for reasons that I gave in my last post and save some overall rifle weight with a lighter scope than the 6500 in the process.

You know as well as I do, that the reported shooting distances for deer sized game and larger, do NOT exceed a 500 yard AVERAGE in just about all hunting situations. Those that do are far more few and far in-between.

Nickel........That video with Wayne Van Zwoll on "shootingtimes" is called "Variable vs Low Powered Fixed" to be exact! On the home page, make sure you click "view all" in video section and go from there to link to "optics" on the next page at the upper right...........

What say ye folk about the Leupold Euro-30 1.25x4x20mm in comparison to the 1.5x5 or 1.75x6 ?

Steel Talleys, the removable ones (but not with the levers, detachable with Torx screw, return to zero), would be perfect. Second the motion of low powered scopes.
