Sure, you can do it;if you're a rifle nut, you'll be bored. If you're more of a HUNTER than a rifle nut,it's easy.I would exclude big bears from the mix.
But "everything" here, plus APG cuts a pretty big swath, because to me "everything" means it has to be suitable not only for the open country of the West, plains, mountains, north slope timber, etc.,but must also be light and maneuverable for the whitetail woods of the East,Wisconsin, or anywhere else you shoot whitetail deer, near and far.
The configuration of the rifle becomes as important as the cartridge.I can't think of anything more nightmarish than a 26" barreled 300 mag in a whitetail thicket;I'm less than enthused about 24" also. But lots of stuff can fill the role and I'd be inclined towards a bolt gun,22" barrel, weighing 7-7 3/4 pounds (as someone stated)chambered in a standard cartridge like the 30/06, 270,7x57, 280;or if you simply must have a short action 7/08 or 308,but these two would not be my choice. If you want a faster cartridge you could go with the WSM's in a light package like a Kimber, but in this rifle I would not want anything burning any more powder than a WSM.
What would I use? One of the rifles I already own and have been hunting with for years; M70 FW chambered in either 30/06 or 270 with a mid-range variable or a fixed 4X or 6X. I would want something I could get ammo for anywhere and these two qualify.
You can shade these two ballistically today, but really only at the expense of more powder, more recoil, longer barrels, more muzzle blast, etc. Solid chest hits with today's good bullets from either will handle anything from pronghorn to moose as far as is rational.
The dough you save from not purchasing other similar rifles to these two,can be put into a 375H&H or Ruger for those situations where more power is REALLY needed.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

If the vision goes in and out at around 3250fps and weighs about 180 grains...It might be a dream of my 300 winamg, was there a huge freezer?

If the rifle has to be accurate and have no feeding problems, you know which one to avoid... grins...When the smoke clears from the vision, in your hands you will find a Rem 700 or a Sako. The weird part of the dream is that the rifle will be a side by side and an over and under to have a total of 4 barrels. Chambered in .270 win, .308 win, .300 win mag, and .338 win mag, with a Leupold 2.5-8 centered atop this BEAST to help with the weight issues. It will be living in a Micky or H-S stock. It won't have any funky triggers that you have to push forward or have any wiggly things growing in the middle of it.It will also have a simple slide saftey, nothing odd that swings around or flips up..another grin...A 24" stainless pipe/pipes will be perfect. It HAS to be stainless because it will see LOTS of USE and ABUSE. Attatched to the forearm will be a Harris bipod....Well, if it must have only 1 bbl, HMMMMM???? .300 win mag (hard choice here). -Roger

I would stick with a heaver barrel... if not go with a 30-06. I'm sure you meant to say .338-06.
