gimme your $.02 please... should i build a 416 remmy or buy one? i have a lead on a 416 remmy, built very nice...m70 ss classic action, started life as a 300wm, was oppened to eject the 416 rounds...douglas bbl, bedded in a brown precision stock, with a sling swivel mtd on bbl, open sites, configured by a well known local gunsmith....so i am not worried about the rifle being a butcher block...lol
or should i build one as i want?
i have a 375 ss classsic, that was bought as a donor....
it would be more economical to purchase the finished 416...buuut...lol
just cannot decide!
please offer suggestions!

91xlt,
I guess, to me, it would depend on two things: 1)How strapped for cash I was, i.e. can I actually afford to do the build that I want, and 2) Just how close the finished rifle is to what I want? It sounds like the finished rifle was done right by a good gunsmith, so I can't see anything wrong with going that route. It's also with basically the same action as what you have available for your build. The finished rifle actually sounds very nice to me. I suppose I would handle it and see if the stock fits you like you want, how it balances, barrel length where you want it, etc. If all was copacetic and the price was right, I'd pull the trigger and have a rifle you can shoot right now.

Buy the built rifle ... if you love it then fine tune it for your preferences ... if not keep saving for the build-up and then just befor ecommisioning it, sell the rifle you have. I always reckon a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Cheers... Con

If you like it and the price is right then buy it..If not then build one like you want..Personally I would build one on a 98 Mauser action, but thats just my preference for DGR's...

gonna keep on track with a build...
i bought the 375 for this, and for imo a good reason...the action is sized correctly, not modified.
gotta find a nice tube now...

I'd build.. Then you have exactly what you want.. Any rifle already a 'custom' is one you will be wishing was just a bit different in places..
The .375 you have is already set up for the bigger round.. Just add a good barrel and you're well on the way; just depends on the stock you wanna add..

Your inital post suggests that you will always be wondering "what if..." if you did not build. with that said i would build it as you want it using the donor action you already have. Sure it will cost more but you will never doubt "what could have been". I have done several builds as well as customized several factory rifles by accurizing, restocking and modifying something that was already close to what i wanted. in the end the custom you order to be built is not not much more in the end and it is exactly what you ordered!
I must caution that you do not rush into it at all. You also need to contact a good smith with the skills you require for the job. Then you need to outline what you are after and fine tune that plan. My best customs are those that I gave the most thought to and worked with my smith on ideas from both of us. Sometimes the little details that get changed along the way result in the best fine points of an excellent weapon!
Walk softly and carry a big stick. Prefferably one that shoots big bullets.
