I just couldn't resist. I hope I got a decent deal on this one.

I was looking at a box of old holsters and a father and son walked up to the counter of my local gun shop. They were looking for a cheap .22lr. They asked about a couple of Marlins on a back wall. I saw them myself, but from that distance, they both looked like pretty late models, so I wasn't that interested. The clerk picked up the 39A he said it was a 1954 Golden Mountie and its $399. My radar perked up at that point. The father and son walked off to look at something else. I dropped the holsters and jumped over to look at the 39A on the counter.

It is a 1954 (#L2469x) 20" Golden Mountie with a straight grip, micro groove barrel, and it is in Mint condition. The metal is at least 97%, the hood is still on the front site, the wood is great, but showing a couple of minor handling marks here an there but still 95%. The bullseye is still there, no one has drilled it for swivels.

The barrel does not say Golden Mountie and the barrel is stamped "39A", but I had heard from some Marlin guys on another site that this was not uncommon and that it was after 1954 that they started to print "AM" on the barrels.

I'll post a few pictures when my camera battery charges up. I am curious if I got a good deal here or if I paid more or less what its worth.

You bought a great rifle, a true classic .22 LR lever gun. Around here that rifle would probably have priced a little higher, maybe another $50 or so more. Regardless, it is a well built, classy little rifle.

I saw one of like description sell on GB a few weeks ago for $810 if my memory is correct. I think you made a very good deal, but it really doesn't matter about the price if you like it, and why would you not, because they are getting harder and harder to find in any condition.
