My dad was interested in buying a better gun to replace his old Parker-Hale .30-06. He's not a gun-head like I am, just wants a decent basic boomer for deer/pigs/whatever. I happened to see a used .270 WSM basic V-guard at a pawnshop yesterday...topped with a Bushy 3200 3-9x40 and Talley mounts. Good condition, smooth. They wanted $400 for it. My dad is on a trip up north, called him up, he wanted it so I talked them down to $400 including Texas tax smile

Took it to the range today, shot 3 3-shot groups, all were decent, the best was about 1.25" at 100. That is almost my best group ever from the bench. It was HOT today, about a hunnert, so it was tough.

I used the "cheap" Core-Lokt 130s...if cheap is $40 a box! Couldn't find anything cheaper...boo! Academy didn't have the WSM, Gander had the CL and a couple of $50-60 loads.

Pretty damn good deal for $400 IMO...she shoots better than I can, just like my sub-MOA Vanguard '06. That rifle has some power behind it, kicks similar to my '06 with 150s. I looked at the ballistics tables and that caliber is a hottie IMO.

Not easy to do...I wish I had the Parker Hale.

You can't beat the Remington Core-Lokt on deer sized game.

Congrats on the Vanguard.

I bought my dad a 700 BDL chambered for .243 about ten years ago. He had gone on and on about a .243 forever, and I ran up on one at a gun show that looked brand new. He doesn't even hunt, don't know what he wanted with it, but anyway, he got it. I put on some kind of glass, and zeroed it with 100 grain Corlokts. Good shooter. Took it hunting that fall and killed a couple deer with it. Then I gave it to him and as far as I know it is still in his closet.

As long as he is happy with it, I am.

Congratulations on finding a rifle for your dad.

I think he will enjoy it, his old Parker-Hale was one of the cheaper ones they made. He bought that one used over 30 years ago, also an '06, killed a couple elk and some deer with it.

My only complaint about the WSM is ammo availability and price. You can get '06 around the world and it is cheaper. I do see lots of potential in this .270 though... Remington claims 3285 fps with the 130s I bought...good lord! I like the idea of a good 150 in it for wapiti, my dad wouldn't have to bring his ancient '06 for that.

I love my ancient .270. I try to buy those old Mausers when I get the chance.

Sounds like a great gun. i like Vanguards and Howa's. I have heard nothing but high praise from my neighbor about his .270 WSM. And it should do the job on deer/pigs/whatever.

How big are those whatever where you hunt? grin

We don't have much "whatever" down here in TX, but it could be his elk gun if that opportunity happens again. The old Parker-Hale is not very accurate. Really no need for either the '06 or .270 WSM down here for our anemic deer and mostly medium pigs...but the flexibility is nice for future possibilities.

Understood. Just picking on you. They are screamers. Do you load your own? I understand the ammo is pretty expensive. I thought the recoil was a lot higher, but I just looked it up and it is only slightly more than a normal 150.
