Heck, you can get 2200 with the ordinary .458 Winchester in a 22" barrel.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

dont shoot my Lott much, my 458 win in a mark x does just as much, 2200 with AA 2230, 24" barrel.

but my Lott load is win748, 86 grains for 2225, near max in my gun.

What is with all the hoopla regarding the Lott nowadays. Not much difference between it and the Win Mag. I am quite happy with my BRNO 602, and don't see the need to rechamber to the Lott.

I believe the whole design idea was avoidance of compressed loads so the round can chuck the 500 grainer at 2150.

So if a guy has a Lott and some 500's he should sell it and get a Win mag? Am I reading this right? I think the guy owns a Lott and wanted some load info for what looks like a not to hot load and all he is getting is that he should have a Win mag! Wow. Tough crowd, should get a 460 and really be out there.

The ONLY powder that will get you to 2300 and even to 2350 with a 500 gr. bullet is IMR-4320. It was made for the Lott...but the recoil is menaceing to say the least...Start at 80 grs and work up to max in your rifle..Max has been about 83 in most rifles and 84 in others that I have built...For hunting load down to around 80 grs. its mild and very little pressure.

I have gotten 2345fps out of my .458-Lott but it will also keep you from falling asleep too. I have used some of those Barnes 450 grain bullets but never managed (4.5 inches at 70 yds) to get them to group worth a Tinker's Damn. The rifle perfers 500 grain bullets and using a rifle scope, will print 2.5-MOA from the bench for 2 shots......Ouch! We only did this once mind you.

I love the Lott, but IMO the recoil is about the worst of the worst..I would rather shoot a 505 or 500 Jefferys in that respect.

IL, in my Ruger, 78 grains of AA2230 does 2206 fps with a Hornady 500 grain SP and CCI250s. The Accurate powder website lists 74-82 grains with the components listed and a 24" test barrel. My rifle with a 23" bbl. seems to shoot about 100 fps faster with the same charge. There are also data there for AA2520 with a top MV of 2300 fps. I think 2200 fps is plenty for what I plan to hunt. Gets my attention but it's not the worst recoil I've felt.

Accurate powder 458 Lott data

Three other powders that work very well in the Lott are: H4895, H335 and TAC.

Another couple of powders to try are Varget and RL-15. Even with a drop tube it'll be a compressed load, but it'll drive 500 gr 2300 fps. I've had two 458 lotts, and there was a considerable difference in the chambers and hence max loads, so I won't post any loads. I suggest looking at 458 win mag data, and working up from there.

Can't help with loads for 500gn as I settled on 450tsx @2300 in mine. Interesting thing is felt recoil is significantly higher at 2350 fps. Don't know if the recoil pad bottoms out, if my shoulder bottoms out or there is some odd parallel universe in the physics of recoil. Have heard similar comments from others, so once you find max velocity it may be worth downloading a little to see how it feels.
