I could use some help. I just got this 1907 ser# 1640xx. It has the holes in the grip for a lanyard ring but it is missing. The grips look to be in better shape then the rest of the gun. This would go along with the grips being replaced in the 60s when it came back from Portugal. I need to know if getting a lanyard ring is possible or if not, has anyone made one that would look orignal. Thanks for any help. Bill
You might ask over on the French Military Firearms forum at www.gunboards.com; the French used Savages and somebody over there might have/know a source.
Hard to imagine when these little guns were considered military arms, but hundreds of thousands of various 7.65/.32s were. At least the Savages were of high quality and would shoot if you kept them clean.....
Bill - Daniel Stern's "10 Shots Quick" indicates "Portuguese serials start as low as #121224 with 50 to 60 pieces scattered through the range up to #164000. Slightly more than 225 guns came from the #164857 - #165922 group." Stern had access to the Savage pistol ledgers and provides some of the best info short of a factory letter. It appears yours may fall between the known Portuguese SN ranges and is probably a French military contract pistol. Either way it is going to be hard to find a lanyard - rare as hens teeth (even though the French and Portuguese contract pistols made up over 15% of the total M1907 .32 caliber pistols that were made). Good hunting.
Thanks guys for the information. I guess I will take a picture of a 1907 with a ring on it to my gunsmith and see if he can make a replica. I have Browers book, I need to get that Stern book also. Thanks again. Bill
I have one of these at #164173. I have considered as Portuguese because it has the ring and one grip with the Port crest. ? I thought I could attach a pic, guess not? Wiley
