I've got a winchester model 70 custom shop 358 winchester and the barrel on it is 24".
I'd really like a 22" barrel.
Given only 15 of these rifles were made I'm thinking it would be bad Karma to cut it down, and I'd be better off selling it and getting a different rifle.
What would you do.

If it was a hunting rifle to me, I'd cut the barrel down so it was what I wanted. Heck, I don't care if the kids get a few bucks less at the estate sale.

+ 1 on bad karma. If you are positive about the low nuber of such rifles made, please do not cut it down.
It is something special, if not to you, then to someone else. Find that someone, and get what you want from the proceeds.
From a practicality view, I agree with you. I might even go back to 20 ".

I wrote the custom shop before they closed and I have a letter from them where they tell me they only made around 15 of them... so yes I have proof.
It's a beautiful rifle, hate to sell it but I really want something shorter for the 358.
I'll probably put it on Gunbroker, just don't like doing it.

Scan the letter and put it up on Gunbroker when you post the rifle and you will get an even higher price! 15 is a really low number so you should be able to sell it and buy a carbine (or modify a more common rifle) to your liking -- with a profit. Documentation usually does add to the price. John

FWIW, I would not cut it down unless the custom shop would agree to do it--even then, probably not.

if its in perfect shape dont cut it but if its a hunting rifle with some wear cut it off. if its only one of 15 the only way its going to be worth top dollar is in unfired and perfect shape with box and hang tags if they come that way from the custom shop.

You appear to be shoveling out some inexperienced advise.
The value potential could easly purchase 2 hunting grade weapons, or even possibly 3.

It'd have to be for a collector, because anyone buying it to hunt it and appreciates the .358 would do exactly what you want to do with it...(chop it) <grins>
What sort of metal/stock configuration?

If you think everything else about the rifle is perfect, and you'd run it forever...then chop it and keep it! Otherwise sell it and put the proceeds toward your "perfect" 358.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

It depends upon how much you could get for it and how attached to it you are. If you're not that attached to it and it'll command a good price then I'd sell it and have one built just like I wanted it. Custom shop rifles are pretty but rarely function and shoot like one built by a good gunsmith.

...If I absolutely loved the gun, and wanted it for MY hunting rifle,I wouldn't hesitate to cut the barrel to MY length. If you bought the gun as an investment to sell, thats another thing. Please yourself.

If it was my rifle, I would have bought it to use. I dont buy stuff just so I can sell it later on. Hack the barrel, and enjoy it. besides there are still 14 others out there with 24" barrels
